Job Summary - At IWM we are committed to providing inspiring, accessible and appealing exhibition experiences for our audiences. This role will be an essential part of our aim to meet our visitors needs and challenge their expectations through story-led and people-focused interpretation.


As Exhibitions and Interpretation Officer you will work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to develop our interpretation concepts and narratives and shape our creative programming.


Focusing primarily on projects at IWM North, with occasional travel to other IWM sites, you will work to create compelling and audience-centred new interpretation, project managing a range of small and medium-sized projects.

You will also manage the maintenance and updates to existing interpretation in the permanent Main Exhibition Space (MES), and provide support to the Exhibitions and Interpretation Manager for our temporary exhibitions programme.


As part of our dynamic exhibitions team, you will work to the Exhibitions and Interpretation Manager in co-ordination with the Exhibitions Production and Delivery team.


The post holder will provide administrative support for the exhibition programme, as well as bringing their interpretation expertise and project support to other members of the Exhibitions team when necessary.


Key duties


You will be expected to work independently as well as across different teams in order to contribute to and deliver the priorities of IWM - using your knowledge, skills, talent and potential to the best of your ability.

In addition, your duties will include:
Project manage all aspects of small and medium sized projects led by the Exhibitions, Interpretation and Design team including:

  • Developing visitor-focused, creative interpretation plans and working collaboratively with Exhibition and Interpretation Managers and Curators to develop exhibition and interpretation content.
  • Assisting with the development of project briefs.
  • Commissioning and selecting content for exhibitions, MES renewals and updates, and updates to digital products (including web and gallery interactives).
  • Drafting, editing and proofreading interpretive text as required.
  • Project management of smallscale exhibitions and interpretation projects in line with IWM project management and procurement processes.
  • Setting up and leading project update meetings for staff from across IWM, ensuring clear and timely communication of project goals and associated schedules.
  • Managing exhibition budgets in line with IWM procedures.
  • Working collaboratively with designers, artists, consultants and contractors and managing their contracts.
  • Liaising with stakeholders from within IWM and externally to ensure their input at appropriate stages.
  • Ensuring that the necessary internal approvals are sought, gained and implemented.
  • Progress chasing and monitoring to ensure exhibition schedules are followed.
  • Managing and issuing object lists and liaising with DCM on the movement of IWM collection items to and from exhibitions and to other branches if required.
  • Ensuring that IWM Collections Management standards are met.
  • Ensuring that access issues are addressed.
  • Developing and managing risk registers; maintaining paper and electronic records in line with IWM procedures.
  • Ensuring that staff, consultants and contractors adhere to appropriate Health & Safety
  • Working closely with the Exhibitions Production, Display and Workshop Team to schedule their involvement in projects and maintenance.
  • Managing updates and maintenance of galleries, museum displays, interactives and AV installations including scheduling, content selection, budgeting, appointing contractors and managing internal resources.
  • Project manage and deliver new Big Picture Shows and Downtime within the MES, working with Curatorial and AV teams, and when necessary, external creatives and producers.
