The Role

Despite colorectal cancer (CRC) being the second most common type of cancer death, awareness of the disease is low, particularly among ethnically diverse populations and adults from socioeconomically deprived areas.

While screening for CRC is highly effective, 90% of cases are diagnosed via the symptomatic route, and at least one-third of all CRCs are diagnosed as a result of emergency presentation.

The high level of CRC diagnosed after an emergency presentation is problematic, as 41% of these cancers are diagnosed at an advanced Stage, when 5-year survival is only 10%.

There is therefore a pressing need to identify additional ways of promoting early diagnosis of CRC.

Pharmacists are the third largest regulated group of health care professionals worldwide.

The 'positive pharmacy care law' stipulates that community pharmacy (pharmacies situated on high streets, neighbourhood centres general practices and supermarkets) offers better access to people living in areas of highest deprivation compared with other branches of primary care.

This qualitative research project, funded by the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit Programme (RfPB), is designed to understand more about the potential role community pharmacists in screening for and early diagnosis of CRC.

The aims and objectives of the project are outlined below.

Primary Aim

  • To coproduce a set of practice guidelines and research recommendations about how community pharmacy can facilitate early CRC diagnosis.

Specific objectives:

- to elicit and rank ideas if and how community pharmacy staff could i) promote awareness of screening and symptoms, ii) undertake individual CRC risk assessment and iii) make integrated referrals.
- to identify variations in attitudes (as expressed during workshops) towards community pharmacy supporting early diagnosis of CRC by sex, ethnicity, professional background, and region.
- to develop a plan to develop a plan of disseminating practice guidelines and research recommendations

The post-holder will coordinate these activities and, as public-patient involvement (PPI) is central to the project, lead PPI activities and will also assist in developing and implementing a plan to maximise impact from the project

This post 0.5 WTE and is fixed term for a period of 12 months.
