Job description:


DIO Regional Delivery Overseas and Training (OS&Trg) provides a range of infrastructure and training support functions across the UK and overseas.

The organisation is Head of Establishment (HoE) for the UK Defence Training Estate, provides direct training support to UK Armed Forces and wider MOD, in addition to supporting Cadets, other Government Departments and foreign armed forces.

We provide these services overseas in Germany, Canada, Kenya and Belize, where we are not HoE.

The Overseas Region & UK Defence Training Estate delivers a safe, balanced place to train.

We do this by running and developing hard, soft and rural services, and providing training advice and mentorship to help our Armed Forces and other organisations use the military training estate optimally and efficiently.


OS&Trg lead all aspects of the provision of a Training Estate that is of the right size and standard against the endorsed need, is fit for purpose, safe, well lead, balanced and critical to social and environmental considerations.

As the Training Safety Officer you will report to the Regional Commander Scotland & Northern Ireland and will handle the day-to-day allocation and delivery of a safe training environment for ranges and the training estate, including oversight of Live Firing Marksmanship Training (LFMT), and dry training:

  • Provide compliance assurance by controlling the use of range and training facilities to ensure the maintenance of the safe place.
  • Provide advice and support, relevant sitespecific information, production of standing orders and risk assessments and if required, correcting noncompliance.
  • Understand the military Safe System of Training (SST) and show a full confirmed understanding and experience of what the user needs.

Person specification:


Main Responsibilities

  • Ensure the provision of the safe place
  • Produce and review standing orders, risk assessments and other range and training area management and control documentation.
  • Lead all aspects of compliance with standing orders and relevant legislation.
  • Brief and guide users on safety procedures, conduct of training and sitespecific information on hazards, template restrictions and standard methodology, enabling efficient and safe use of the facilities.
  • Maintain effective liaison within DIO, Industry Partners, contractors and local collaborators to foster collective working, safeguard the reputation of the MOD and maintain the authorisation to train.
  • Carry out the duties of Explosives Safety Representative and Establishment Fire Focal Point for Garelochhead Training Centre.
  • Review, allocate and authorise range and training area bids on the Booking and Management Systems (BAMs), managing and deconflicting competing users' aspirations for training through an understanding of their training objectives and relative priorities.
  • Help maintain the ecological and environmental sustainability of the training areas and ranges; provide advice to conservation bodies, interest groups and the public.

Environmental Factors / Hazards Associated with the Post


A mixture of outdoors and indoor working environments; hazards include proximity to firing and where needed the removal and accurate disposal of ammunition and pyrotechnics.

  • Full UK Driving Licence due to location and size of the training area there is a requirement to drive white fleet vehicles
