Metro is looking for a sub-editor to join our London team to help deliver news and entertainment to our print audience.


Role responsibilities

  • Create and curate highly engaging editorial print content, ensuring our large and diverse readership is presented with a compelling final product
  • Subedit and produce the weekday paper to a high editorial standard, with a focus on news copy and headlines
  • Rewrite, factcheck, and correct copy, ensuring it is legally and factually accurate
  • Identify potentially sensitive content and escalate to department heads where necessary
  • Proofread pages before they go to press
  • Make sure all editorial content adheres to Metro's style guide
  • Work closely with editors and colleagues to ensure a consistent tone of voice across the Metro brand as a whole

Essential skills/qualities

  • Excellent standard of written English and attention to detail
  • High quality subediting and fact checking skills
  • Excellent knowledge of current affairs, a strong news sense and the ability to work efficiently and without errors in a fastpaced newsroom environment
  • Passion for detail and how articles are presented
  • Familiarity with Metro as a brand, both online and in print
  • Strong communication and people skills and the ability to work as part of a small team
  • Understanding of UK media and copyright laws. Understanding of legal covenants such as the UK Editors' Code of Practice
  • Willingness to work in the evenings from Sunday to ThursdayThe above list is not exhaustive and constantly evolves, based on the needs of the business. A high level of adaptability is essential.
