Job Introduction


i is looking for an
Assistant News Editor to work in its growing newsroom, helping to drive its digital subscriptions growth.


Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Using analytics to develop and drive forward stories and exclusive news projects
  • Working with our team of awardwinning reporters to deliver exclsuive articles, features, explainers and anaylsis
  • Working with audience executives and reporters to identify story ideas based on topics of interest to i's readers
  • Copy editing, creating strong headlines, identifying breaking stories, suggesting original angles on agenda news
  • Presenting story ideas to editors at conference on occasion.

Skills and Experience

  • A selfstarter bursting with ideas and a track record in developing exclusive journalism
  • Two years' experience on national or major regional newsdesk, news websites or as a senior reporter
  • Strong understanding of the demands of digital publishing is essential for this role
  • Understanding of SEO and how to use social media to promote stories is key
  • Commitment to i's editorial standards of impartial and incisive coverage
  • Excellent knowledge of the news agenda from Westminster to Washington
  • Strong news judgement and an ability to spot news stories and make the case for them in conference or to individual editors
  • Superb news and feature writing skills and the ability to work at speed accurately and under pressure
  • Ability to give direction, advice, and feedback to reporters
  • Approach the news agenda in a creative and original manner
  • Good knowledge of media law and the Editors' Code of Practice
