Description

The Pathology Department is part of the Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and sits within the Medical Clinical Business Unit (CBU 1).

It opened in 1977 and consists of three service areas; Cellular Pathology, Blood Sciences and Transfusion and Microbiology. It offers a wide range of services including virology/serology. The cellular pathology department provides a full histopathology, non-gynae cytopathology and autopsy service.

A common Biomedical Scientist staff structure, with a single Head BMS in technical charge within each department operates across all disciplines in Pathology.

More recent organisational changes due to the demands of the NHS Plan, the Modernisation of Pathology and the developments of pathology networks have resulted in a workforce strategy resulting in a revised staff structure and redefined job roles to deliver improved methods of working and to enhance recruitment and retention of staff.

The Haematology Medical Staff consists of Consultant, 1 SpR on the Sheffield/ North Trent rotation, 1 CT2 on the medical rotation and 1 FY2.

Haematology is responsible for the anticoagulant service and is delivered by the anticoagulant pharmacist.

All SPAs are expected to take place within Barnsley Hospital unless agreed otherwise with the Clinical Lead. We also provide support for the Acute oncology Service (0.25PA). All sessions are scheduled for 4 hours duration.
