Required Test:
All applicants will be required to take The Law Enforcement Civil Service Exam (LECSE) implemented August 2017.

The LE Exam is conducted every - Wednesday and Friday, at 8:30am. Please contact Nueces County Sheriff Office, Recruiter Jeremy Tamez at for scheduling details.


SUMMARY


Serves as the watch commander for a given shift in Patrol Division, including responsibility for the coordination of information exchange between the shift and other sections and divisions in the department and outside agencies.

Assigns and oversees the work of and evaluates the performance of employees assigned to the shift.

Recommends personnel actions such as transfers, promotions and discipline as needed.


The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


Approves, submits or files shift schedules, criminal cases or reports, accident reports, criminal or traffic cases or complaints, maintenance requests and prepared cases.

Takes any necessary action regarding reports.

Monitors radio traffic and quality of radio assigned calls, responses and activities. (both emergency and non-emergency).

Communicates with division and administration for maintenance of operations.

Assigns work to deputies, monitors their caseloads and reviews their work.

Coordinates activities with other divisions and sections.

Retrieves supplies for division.

Meets with prosecutors to discuss and sign prosecution complaints and retrieves dispositions.

Prepares letters of requests for divisional training, equipment and operations improvements.

Plans and assigns out of town trips to pick up prisoners out of town and out of state.

Plans and supervises special assignments.

Conducts safety and informal training.

Evaluates and makes decisions in special situations involving line investigations and training functions.

May perform inspections on vehicles assigned to warrant section.

Verifies timecards and overtime sheets.

Participates in investigations, police operations, apprehensions and arrests.

Interviews and takes written statements from victims, suspects and witnesses.

Keeps abreast of relevant case law and changes in Penal Code.

Substitutes for Captain in his or her absence.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages subordinate supervisors including Sergeants and Deputy Sheriffs and other personnel assigned to the shift.

Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Nueces County policies and applicable laws.


Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Any employee who drives a vehicle on official business must have a driving record which meets standards set by the County and the County's insurance carrier.


QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university (B.S. or B.

A.) in Criminal Justice or a related field plus two years of supervisory experience (sergeant or above) in law enforcement; or, an Associates degree (A.A.S.

or A.A.) in the field of Criminal Justice plus four years of supervisory experience (sergeant or above) in law enforcement; or, any equivalent combination of experience, education and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities as deemed acceptable by the Sheriff.


LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.


MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions and percentages.


REASONING ABILITY


Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Intermediate certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
