Network Rail owns and operates the railway infrastructure in England, Wales and Scotland on behalf of the nation.

That's over 30,000 km of track, 25,000 bridges, 16,000 km of earthworks and thousands of signals, level crossings and points.

They are also responsible for maintenance at 2,500 train stations, fully managing 18 of the largest. As well as overseeing railway timetabling for England, Scotland and Wales. The company is organised into central functions (Technical Authority, System Operator and Route Services) and 5 Regional businesses.

The
Advanced Analytics team sits within the Technical Authority.

Amongst other responsibilities, we own and manage the development of whole lifecycle forecasting models of railway assets (such as track, signalling systems and bridges).

These models are used to help plan the spending requirements of future Control Periods by estimating the impact on asset condition of different funding scenarios.

We are looking for 2 x Whole Lifecycle Costing Specialists


About the role (External):


What will my typical day look like?
The average day of a Whole Lifecycle Costing Specialist will vary from one day to the next and include (but not limited to) the following:

  • Perform/scope out pieces of analysis to understand asset behaviour and thus advise asset forecasting models.
  • Design and develop appropriate asset modelling methodologies.
  • Implement large scale portfoliolevel (networkwide) models for use in Network Rail's investment planning process.
  • Produce analysis, tools, and documentation to aid the understanding of asset model outputs for engineering, finance, planning and regulators.
  • Maintain awareness of developments in whole lifecycle costing, e.g., via the Institute of Asset Management and university activities.

Person Specification

  • Ability to understand sophisticated engineering processes or physical systems.
  • Handle, combine and cleanse large data sets from different sources.
  • Write ad hoc code for model prototyping, ideally with experience of Object-Oriented coding (Python, R, C#, VBA are typically used within the team and training is encouraged).
  • Design and construct mathematical models of railway assets.
  • Understand how to use statistical methods.
  • Ability to write detailed documentation that is easy to read and interpret.
  • Communicate model methodologies and results to people with little modelling knowledge such as Asset Engineers.

What skills and experience are required?

  • Degree in numerate field (such as Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, Engineering or Computer Science).
  • Experience of working to demanding timescales.

Location: At present the roles are located at the Network Rail offices based in
Milton Keynes, for these roles, you are expected to live within 90 minutes travel time of the office or be willing to relocate. Other locations may be considered on a case-by-case basis by the hiring manager.

Band & Salary: 4B - £34,050 - £38,305 per annum, plus benefits depending upon experience
