UK Health Security Agency exists to protect and improve the nations health and well-being and reduce health inequalities. We do this through world-leading science, knowledge and intelligence, advocacy, partnerships and the delivery of specialist public healthservices.


It provides a regional reference centre for London and Southern England and also receives primary samples from several NHS hospitals in the London area.

The NMRS-South is part of the UKHSA National Infection Service and is located in Colindale.

At an internationallevel the NMRS-South is a WHO Supranational Reference Laboratory within the Global Programme on Drug Resistance in Tuberculosis and works with other designated National Reference Centres.

In addition to its reference, diagnostic and clinical activities, theNMRS-South carries out research projects in the UK, Europe and Africa.


Responsibilities:
As the Laboratory Safety Officer Senior Biomedical Scientist and Deputy laboratory Manager your main responsibilities will include:

  • To follow agreed protocols and policies in accordance with the UKHSA policies and procedures.
  • Perform manual, semiautomated and fully automated laboratory investigations, then interpret and record test results according to given Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), including performing genotypic (molecular) tests, which can be complex technicalprocedures.
  • Provide technical advice and results to all users, as required.
  • This supervision will extend to persons seconded to the NMRS-South for periods of technical training.
  • To assess the clinical relevance and importance of diagnostic test requests, work in progress and test results.
  • To ensure that all reagents are prepared, stored, and used in a manner suitable for patient investigations.
  • Contribute to the development, evaluation and introduction of new methodologies as required.

Person specification Essential Criteria:


  • Commitment to and focused on quality, promotes high standards in all they do.
  • Degree or equivalent qualification that is acceptable to the HCPC.
  • A post graduate degree in a relevant science or Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences.
  • HCPC registration
  • Minimum of 3 years post HPC registration
  • Full conversant of working in a regulated environment with quality systems and knowledge of UKAS.
  • Fully conversant with CPA / ISO 15189 Quality standards

Desirable Criteria:

  • Evidence of managerial training/advanced technical expertise.
  • Demonstrated experience in a Healthcare Environment
  • Ability to prepare and produce concise yet insightful communications for dissemination to senior stakeholders and a broad range of stakeholders as required.
  • Experience of creating and giving presentations to a varied group of internal and external stakeholders
