Description

Name of Employer:
The Fresh Air Club

Job Title:
Outdoor Learning Instructor

Salary:
£15 per hour

Location:
Bournemouth, Christchurch, New Forest, Poole and surrounding areas

The Fresh Air Club was created to encourage young people to re-engage with nature and the outdoors.

Our aim is for children to learn new skills and have fun; gain confidence in themselves and learn about the beauty of nature and all of its resources.

We run outdoor learning sessions in schools across Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and The New Forest.

We are looking for an Outdoor Learning Instructor who is passionate about getting kids outdoors and helping them to learn new skills in a fun and engaging way.

We are friendly bunch and would like you to work with us part time to begin with but with the likelihood for this to become a full-time role.

Young people gain both physically and mentally from being in an outdoors environment and we provide educational and development opportunities for young people in and outside of schools.

The Fresh Air Club started with just one bushcraft after school club on a Tuesday afternoon and a single holiday club date at Easter and has now grown into a company providing tailored outdoor learning sessions for schools linked to the national curriculum objectives.

In school, we offer an alternative method for children to learn and develop whilst supporting their learning in the classroom.

Sessions are run in whole class and small groups sizes which support the national curriculum objectives, and these run alongside sessions with children who need a little more individual care and attention where we focus on personal development, teamwork, communication and improving trust.

After-school clubs are run at various locations across Bournemouth, Christchurch, the New Forest, and Poole, and holiday clubs are run in Bournemouth and St Ives in the school holidays.

We also provide residential camping opportunities for school trips providing memories and experiences for children that will last a life time.

We are lucky enough to have access to our own woodland near Fordingbridge where we occasionally run bespoke sessions for families.

It's been quite an adventure since we started with our first after school club

What you will be doing

You will be responsible for the delivery of outdoor learning sessions to children of all ages in various primary schools across Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and the New Forest working with individual children and small groups initially, and whole classes eventually.

You will be required to travel between schools so access to transports is essential.

You will provide curriculum supporting outdoor sessions and help develop new ideas with your experience of working with children. You will be innovative with activities and constantly challenging the children's learning and development in the moment.

To be a key person in carrying out all related responsibilities in building relationships with the children and the schools we work with.

Building and maintaining excellent relationships with teachers, students and parents.

Promoting child welfare and ensure safeguarding policies and procedures are followed.

About you

You might be a qualified teacher, teaching assistant or scout/activities leader with experience of keeping the attention of whole class sized groups.

You will be passionate about child development and making a difference to the lives of children you work with, wanting to engage with them and allow them to experiment and grow.

You will love being outdoors and are fun, adventurous, and reliable. You will be well balanced, empathetic and kind and you will have a great sense of humour.

You will be available for regular weekday sessions at both our school sessions and after-school clubs in Bournemouth, Poole, Christchurch and the New Forest during the school terms.

You will be hungry to pass on a love of nature to the children you work with. You must have a passion for enabling children to learn wherever and however is best for them. "Give a fish a bicycle"

You will be positive (always see the glass half full) with a 'make it happen' attitude.

You will be a good team worker and role model to the children. You will expect the respect you show children to be reciprocated.

You might have experience of being in the scouting movement, maybe you have bushcraft or survival skills knowledge, maybe you're a sports and games enthusiast or you might be a parent with some interesting outdoors hobbies.

You will need high energy brought to every task you take on, and solution driven approach to problems.

You will need access to your own transport to carry equipment.

Additional information

An existing DBS on the auto-renewal/update service, a first aid qualification and safeguarding certification, bushcraft/scouting, survival skills knowledge; sports/games/outdoor activities qualifications or interests are all desirable.
