Assistant Safeguarding Officer

Chingford

£17 per hour

Monday to Friday 9am untill 4pm


Working from home 3 days per week, you would be required to be in the office 2 days per week.


We are seeking to appoint an Assistant Safeguarding Officer to join the team working on welfare, safeguarding and vetting cases as part of the delivery of Safe Scouting across the UK.

The post is at Gilwell Park, London.

The team are currently working ona hybrid model, with attendance in the office expected twice a week, and for meetings and development sessions, where required in addition to usual weekly attandance.


As part of the Safeguarding Team, you will be responsible for managing a caseload and giving support and advice to local volunteer managers in responding to concerns or complaints affecting the safety and welfare of young people; for progressing some safeguardingconcerns and making the necessary referrals to statutory agencies where required.

The Assistant Safeguarding Officer will work with Safeguarding Officers, and be supported and supervised by Senior Safeguarding Officers.

Key Accountabilities

  • Assess welfare concerns affecting young people in Scouts, including 'children in need': bullying, selfharm, and other welfare concerns.
  • Assess lower threshold safeguarding referrals, including conduct and suitability issues.
  • Make referrals to statutory or professional agencies in respect of allegations and concerns affecting young people and adult members in Scouting.
  • Contact statutory agencies to gain updates and outcomes of their enquiries, to allow Safeguarding Officers to proceed with safeguarding matters and allegations. Share Scouting updates with statutory agencies.
  • To operate within UK legislation and statutory guidance in relation to young people within Scouts, and adults who hold a Position of Trust
  • Provide support and guidance to Scout volunteer managers to enable them to implement a local response to welfare concerns and allegations regarding adults and young people in Scouting, including supporting the suspension process where appropriate.
  • Contact Scout volunteer managers to provide and receive updates and outcomes of their local enquiries, to allow Safeguarding Officers to proceed with safeguarding matters and allegations.
  • Attend multi agency meetings where required, and support Safeguarding Officers in their attendance at those meetings.
  • Administrative support for case closes as required by management.
  • Other responsibilities deemed suitable for Assistant Safeguarding Officer, as requested by the Safeguarding Team management.

The job may also involve:


  • Assess suitability of leaders where adverse information is shown on disclosure checks
  • Support risk assessment/procedures for ending period of suspension/ensuring suitability regarding adult and youth members.
  • Help to run and present at volunteer manager events and training days across the UK (note this may require occasional work at weekends, or evenings).
Please note the role does not require home visits or direct (face to face) work with young people.


Experience

  • Relevant experience and/or professional qualification in safeguarding/child protection/child welfare or related field.
  • Knowledge of the Scout Movement or similar youth organisations.
  • Understanding and acceptance of fundamental values of Scouting.
  • Knowledge of the Disclosure Bodies' processes
  • Experience of making referrals to and engaging with statutory agencies
  • Experience of communicating with parents and carers regarding complex situations
  • Ability to undertake risk assessments
