  • Job description

  • We are the Environment Agency. We work in partnership with government, local councils, businesses, communities to manage the impacts of climate change, perhaps the most serious longterm threat to the environment, people, and wildlife face.
This role's focus is to protect people and property from flooding.

This will develop your technical, influencing, team working skills to influence development through our regulatory role in planning, permitting, building relationships with key partners such as councils and engaging with a variety of customers on flood risk matters, and supporting modelling and projects.


A typical week may involve:

  • Working alongside councils and communities to improve flood risk management
  • Collaborating to achieve multiple benefits e.g., carbon savings, ecology gain, flood benefits
  • Training on planning/engineering/modelling
  • Catchment/project site visits
  • Data management


  • Patch ownership

  • Responsibility for a catchment area.

  • Our PSO Teams are central to reducing flood risk locally

We do this by:

  • Having an overview of flood risk from all sources and providing strategic direction to the EA and other partner organisations
  • Developing and delivering projects to reduce flood risk to communities while enhancing the environment
  • Regulating works and development through Planning advice and Environmental Permitting
  • Building, improving and utilising data and evidence on flood risk.


  • Experience/skills required

  • On the job training will be provided however through your previous experience you will be able to demonstrate the following:

Skills that are essential:

  • Strong IT skills particularly relating to Microsoft Office
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritise busy and complex workloads independently to meet deadlines
  • Ability to understand technical information and ideas.

The following qualities/experience are desirable:

  • Have a relevant degree or professional qualification e.g. geographical / science /engineering background
  • Flood and coastal risk management or related knowledge or experience
  • Experience of working with members of the public, consultants and professional partners
  • Understanding of Town and Country planning principles, especially National Planning Policy Framework
  • ArcGIS skills and/or experience of using outputs from flood risk models.


A full UK driving licence is desirable as this role involves periodic travel to meet with partners and undertake site visits.
