Description
The role is of a CT 1 or 2 level trainee in general & geriatric medicine. The post holder will be expected to work across the medicine for the elderly wards, rehabilitation unit and outpatients.

They will work closely with the multidisciplinary therapy team and will have close supervision and training from the Geriatric Consultant.

8 South and West

Working on 8 South or 8 West, joining a multidisciplinary team caring for acutely ill older patients.

This involves participating in ward rounds, daily board rounds and reviews of new patients, weekly MDT meetings and family meetings as required.

Occasionally there are medical patients on outlying wards which the post holder may be asked to care for under the supervision of a consultant.

5 West

Working with a multidisciplinary team caring for older patients who are on the rehabilitation unit.

This involves participating in ward rounds, daily board rounds and reviews of new patients, weekly MDT meetings and family meetings.


Outpatient duties:


OPRAC is a rapid access clinic, in which up to 4 patients a day are seen and Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments carried out as well as imaging, blood tests and infusions.

The post involves responsibility for patients attending the clinic under the direction of a consultant Geriatrician.


Departmental activities:

There is a weekly radiology meeting and weekly hospital Grand Rounds during academic term times. There is a weekly departmental educational meeting and a medical meeting every Friday.

There will also be ad hoc teaching requirements for individual students attached to the firm.

The post will provide excellent experience in acute & general medicine for those pursuing a career in a medical speciality, especially geriatrics


At Charing Cross Hospital there are three Elderly Medicine wards: 8 West (22 acute beds), 8 South (25 acute beds) and Lady Skinner Ward (15 acute rehabilitation beds).

There is also an OPRAC clinic (Older patients rapid access clinic) during which up to 4 patients a day are seen and Comprehensive Geriatric Assessments are carried out as well as acute imaging, blood tests and infusions.

There is one outpatients clinic a week held jointly with community therapists and focussed on falls.

Care in all settings is based around the Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment, and close working with the multidisciplinary team.


The post involves inpatient ward work in the Medicine for the Elderly wards (8 South and 8 West) as well as the rehabilitation unit (5 West).

The post also involves work in the OPRAC clinic, a rapid access clinic.

As part of the Elderly Medicine team, the post holder will also work closely with therapies, discharge team and social workers as well as liaise with community teams.

Inpatient and outpatient duties are all well supported by a consultant Geriatrician.
