About the role

- "Oldbury is a nuclear licenced site that finished generating in February 2012 and is currently in the decommissioning phase of its lifecycle. Work is ramping up as we progress towards the care and maintenance phase, there are a number of exciting projects currently underway with more planned in the future._

  • The next phase of decommissioning work at Oldbury includes a project to commission a Fill House and vacuum drying system so that we can empty several sludge/resin tanks on site and process the elevated radiological inventory contained within. Another project plans to collect representative samples of Fuel Element Debris from the vaults to enable decisions to be made on its future management._

The scope of work will be to:

  • Ensure compliance with the Ionising Radiation Regulations, Magnox Radiological Safety Rules, Company standards and other statutory requirements.
  • Provide technical advice in support of the development, production, implementation and review of the arrangements for the site radiological protection programme.

Key Deliverables

  • Provide technical radiological advice to support the site, projects and programmes. The advice will include the production of written documentation including radiological risk assessments, health physics certificates, departmental instructions, technical reports, dose estimates and ALARP reports.
  • Review and approve work order cards (or similar work control documents) for all work carried out within the controlled area boundary.
  • Coordinate radiological inspections and audit programmes to help maintain standards.
  • Track and trend dose uptake of the site and report any anomalies.
  • Respond to any abnormal radiological events and conduct investigations into the cause of these abnormal events.
  • Review the results of routine and nonroutine radiological surveys, ensuring that any anomalies or nonconformities identified are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Advising on the requirements for radiological monitoring to meet legal or company requirements.
  • Provide technical support to the HP Team Leader and his team of HP Monitors who undertake routine and nonroutine radiological surveys across the site.
  • Liaise with company inspectors and external regulators during routine surveillance inspections, audits and investigations.
  • Attain the SQEP appointment to advise on the radiological clearance process at Oldbury.

Qualifications & Experience

  • A member of a relevant professional institute, or ready to join one upon appointment (essential).
  • Detailed knowledge of the Ionising Radiations Regulations and RSA compliance (essential).
  • Experience in operational health physics (essential).
  • To be an excellent communicator and be able to ensure work parties follow standards and expectations through influence and team working (desirable).
  • To have worked within the radiological protection team on a Magnox site (desirable).
Note that within Magnox, this role is known as Radiological Protection Engineer A.
