Principal or Lead Overhead Line Design Engineer
Derby (can also be in Yorkshire OR Surrey)

The Company is a leading consultancy who provide engineering professional services to the electricity sector.

They specialise in the design and survey of Overhead Lines, Underground Cables, and Substation Systems from LV to EHV in the UK and internationally.

The team is currently going through a period of growth with a surplus of work coming in from their clients providing a very strong pipeline of work.

They are investing in the team and are now seeking to hire a Team Leader with 50% of their time on technicalwork and 50% time in management
The role

We are looking for an experienced Overhead Line Engineer to be part of a project team responsible for developing and delivering Engineering Solutions from feasibility to detailed engineering design for Electricity Transmission and Distribution Projects (33kV and above).

The role will be working on projects for DNOs, National Grid and also for renewable energy projects who need the wind farms or battery storage power transmitted from the power plant and wind farms to join the grid.


  • Undertake and be responsible for design and specification of steel Overhead Line structures and Overhead Line Design systems.
  • Take responsibility for project management to ensure projects are delivered in a timely manner, including financial management and attending site meetings where appropriate.
  • Take responsibility for all Health and Safety and CDM issues that may arise on projects and take a leadership role in the development of OHL designs, ensuring compliance with Legislation.
  • Provide expertise to the Company, reviewing and development of Company systems and provision of technical training as appropriate including the mentoring of Junior Engineers.
  • Monitor and undertake management of all design activities, verification of all work undertaken by your design teams and ensuring compliance with company Quality Procedures.
  • Ability to mentor, guide, and train others

We are looking for an ambitious and dynamic individual with excellent technical skills and the ability to nurture and grow the team.


  • Enthusiastic with the ability to set a positive example to others in terms of attitude and approach to work and manage the team accordingly
  • Ideally a member of a Professional Body such as Institution of Civil Engineers or working towards.
  • Ideally to have a Masters Degree in Engineering
  • Ideally minimum 5 year post graduate Overhead Line or Steel structures engineering experience
  • Good knowledge of relevant specifications and legislation, Familiarity with UK, European & International design codes and standards for the Electricity Supply Industry would be advantageous (e.g. National Grid or ENA Technical Specifications, BS EN 50341/IEC 60826, BS 8100/ 5950).
  • Able to produce and approve engineering designs that are compliant with standards and specifications and accurately taking into account all available relevant information and knowledge
  • Experience of Structural Design analysis packages such as iTower, PLS Tower, STAAD Pro, Robot etc
  • Strong effective communication both verbal and written and influencing skills
