Working alongside departments with a range of disciplines from Textile specialists to Electronic and Mechanical engineers, you'll be encouraged to broaden existing and develop new skills to provide truly one-of-a-kind products.


Your talent for creative design and woodworking skills will mean you'll be an integral part of the team working on innovative, often challenging and always interesting projects in support of the nation.


More About You

  • Level 3 diploma or equivalent experience in Furniture Making (or expected to achieve this before joining).
  • Excellent attention to detail and finish.
  • Experience of the setting up and safe use of modern and traditional woodworking machinery.
  • The ability to understand and produce accurate technical drawings.
  • Experience of using CAD drawing software such as Vetric Aspire or equivalent.
  • Handson practical experience of using basic engineering machinery.
  • An understanding of installation techniques.
  • An understanding of advanced woodworking techniques such as woodturning, carving and pattern making.

To work as a Trainee Woodworker, you will be the type of person who:

  • Enjoys problem solving with others and identifies different ways of doing things. You enjoy the challenge of finding innovative solutions to difficult briefs.
  • Enjoys working as part of a team to share knowledge and ideas to achieve better results.
  • Wants to learn new skills and techniques to be the best you can.
  • Is willing to accept constructive criticism and praise when given and are able learn from it.
  • Likes to work under guidance but can use your own initiative when required. You are able to manage your own workload and can adapt to changing demands on your time.
  • Enjoys working on a project from the initial design stage through to the finished product and are willing to work with others as and when necessary to achieve a high standard.

Putting your skills to use
Using your diverse range of skills within the Woodworking team you will:

  • Secure requirements from our customers to design solutions that will be fit for purpose.
  • Plan and execute the construction of items to a high quality and to an agreed date.
  • Conform to the relevant standards of health and safety whilst at work and be considerate of others.
  • Ensure the wider team and customers are uptodate with design proposals and build progress using written or verbal communication.
  • Maintain and expand your woodworking knowledge and skills by attending suitable exhibitions and courses in line with your own and HMGCC's needs.
  • Ensure good record keeping of build procedures using photographs and written documentation.
  • Help to promote best practice on behalf of HMGCC when liaising with other departments, contractors and customers.
