First Class Support provides academic support to students in receipt of disabled student allowance (DSA). We pride ourselves on only employing first class support workers that are passionate about making a difference to the lives of people studying higher education courses across the UK.

Due to continued expansion, we are looking to galvanise our team of highly qualified and experienced specialist support staff. There are currently positions available for a specialist mentor to carry our company name. Therefore applicant competition will be potentially tough, so only the best need apply.


This role is based in Merthyr Tydfil.

Your role:

You will provide highly specialist, specifically tailored, one to one support which helps students address the barriers to learning created by a particular impairment, e.g.

mental-health conditions, or autistic spectrum disorders.

This could include a range of issues, for example, coping with anxiety and stress situations, how to deal with concentration difficulties, time management, prioritising workload and creating a suitable work-life balance.

You should not act as advocates or counsellors.

Your role is to help students recognise the barriers to learning created by their impairment and support them in developing strategies to address these barriers, particularly at times of transition, e.g.

when starting at university or when planning to move on from it.

For some students this support will need to be ongoing while for others it might be gradually phased out or only be required at certain points of their course.


Your Skills:
You will possess an in depth knowledge and you will be able to draw from experience when supporting an individual with a particular disability (e.g. mental-health condition, autistic spectrum disorder). You will demonstrate an understanding of the particular demands of study in HE. You will maintain a close working relationship with other support services, both inside and outside the institution and recognise when there is a need to refer to other services

Additional Information:

The working hours vary according to the needs of the student and the academic timetable. We are seeking support workers who are currently self-employed, or in the process of registering as a self-employed professional.

  • Bachelor's (preferred)

Experience:

- one to one tuition: 1 year (preferred)


Licence/Certification:

  • 6 NAS core modules (preferred)
  • Autism and SPELL in higher education (preferred)
  • Master of Arts /Education (MA /MEd) in Education (preferred)
  • Post Graduate Certificate (PGC) in Autism or Asperges (preferred)
  • Degree and relevant CPD in past two years (preferred)
  • Degree AND Comprehensive training in adult autism (preferred)
