The Role


Thank you for your interest in joining the UK's National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA) as part of the North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA) Internet of Caring Things (IoCT) Programme.


We are looking for a Human Experience Designer to plan, design and carry out activities within our citizen's insight work and to work directly with 227 businesses to deliver 45 digitally enabled repurposed or new to market products and services.

You will specifically be responsible for driving UX discovery and leading the delivery of a number of design projects for the NICA North of Tyne Internet of Caring Things (IoCTTM) Programme, championing user-centred design methodologies to get a deep understanding of the human experience


You will have a passion for user-centred design, co-creation and user research, as well as experience in actively involving and communicating with diverse stakeholders.


The UK's National Innovation Centre for Ageing ( NICA ) at Newcastle University has been funded by Government and the University to create a world in which we all live better, for longer.

We team with innovation experts, industry, academics, and the public, to identify, develop and bring to market data-driven innovative business models, services and products enhancing life as we age and developing new economic opportunities for organizations while promoting a positive impact on society at scale.


The IoCT Programme has been part funded by the North of Tyne Combined Authority for 5 years to assist businesses in the region to increase economic growth, create jobs in key NTCA sectors, and ultimately improve resident wellbeing through developing IoCT enabled products and services.

We are building, with partners, a world class innovation ecosystem providing economic and social opportunities and innovations, with a central focus on citizens and community that will mark the region as an international leader for IoCT innovation.

This is a fixed term position up to 31st December 2026.

Key Accountabilities
To work with the IoCT project team to provide expert advice and assistance to clients to identify the most relevant user experience design activities
Planning, designing and conducting user research and usability testing to understand citizens' needs and behaviours to inform and validate designs
Turning user research findings into actionable insights that inform the design and development of digital or physical products and services
Responsible for driving the delivery of workshops utilizing design methods to gather citizen insights data
Effectively communicates and presents design decisions through wireframes, user flows, diagrams and interactive prototypes with internal and external stakeholders
Maintain and develop extensive knowledge to keep abreast of the latest/most relevant technologies and design techniques Represent NICA and the IoCTTM project and disseminate information about them and their work at events, seminars and webinars Undertake relevant training and development activities in order to develop an awareness of own professional development needs Other duties within the scope and general nature of the grade as required

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience (Essential)
Professional experience in UX design, Product Design or User Research
Experience of design and evaluation of complex hardware/software solutions
Experience facilitating and delivering workshops using a broad range of design methods
Advanced skills in the Adobe Creative Suite and other prototyping tools and techniques (i.e. Figma)
Project management experience
Must have strong organizational skills and be able to determine priorities based on business strategy and schedule needs
Excellent communication skills including the ability to present complex or technical information and design solutions for a multi-disciplinary team
Desirable
Experience driving new methodologies for co-design or participatory design to inform technology development
Experience of developing user interfaces and/or physical prototypes that are used by others
Experience of 3D Modelling and Rapid Prototyping
Accessibility - Design with accessibility in mind, showing familiarity with the WCAG 2.1 guidelines and designing to meet AA standards


Qualifications:

Degree in a design, human-computer interaction or product design field or closely related discipline or equivalent and demonstrable work experience
A design portfolio that includes samples or case studies that effectively communicate your process, including project insights and solutions required
