We are looking for motivated, enthusiastic and driven individuals for this exciting and challenging hands on role in Lancashire.

As a Lead Team Member you'll be responsible for leading and supervising teams in the operation of our flood assets and defences, as well as enacting our contingency plans during a flood incident.

You will also lead teams to carry out the routine maintenance programme, which includes repairing flood defences, mowing embankments, de-weeding river channels, and removing in channel blockages.

Excellent communication and problem solving skills will be required.

Duties include:

  • Leading on site activities together with a team
  • Ensuring activities are completed safely and in line with health, safety and wellbeing practice and our HSW culture
  • Coaching/mentoring others to increase skills, knowledge and experience
  • Planning and organisation of equipment and materials to be available on site
  • Incident response for both flooding and environmental incidents, inside and outside of normal working hours
  • Operating our flood risk assets and equipment
  • Making sure work on site complies with the Environment Agency's conservation and environmental procedures and legislation
  • Working with contractors who deliver both maintenance and incident work on our behalf
  • Assist in planning the maintenance programme.
  • Providing support by producing planned risk management documentation relating to sites they manage


  • The team 1

  • Our field teams protect people and the environment by maintaining and operating our flood and coastal risk management assets and responding to incidents locally across Lancashire, as well as nationally. Field teams have a range of technical skills used in the maintenance of watercourses, along with asset maintenance and small construction projects.
The field teams also support our incident response, day and night, through a standby rota that attracts additional allowances.

  • Experience/skills required 1
  • We are looking for someone with an excellent track record of field, or site based, work and who can demonstrate good leadership and communication skills with a positive attitude.
  • Leadership skills are desirable
  • Selfmotivated, with the ability to work well in a team and independently
  • Positive and adaptable
  • Able to communicate effectively with team members and colleagues, landowners and the public
  • You should have a good understanding of site based health and safety requirements and be able to maintain/develop a strong HSW culture on site
  • Able to solve problems, make decisions and use initiative
  • Literacy and numeracy skills are required
  • Competent with IT, such as Microsoft word, and IT devices such as the iPad and iPhone
  • Planning and organisation skills to arrange equipment and materials
A full UK driving licence is required

This role includes being on a standby rota which attracts additional payments on top of the basic salary.
