This opportunity sits in Supply Chain Operations (SCO), a division of Route Services that procures safe, sustainable, products and services that are in turn used to improve and enhance the rail infrastructure across Britain.

SCO aims to deliver excellent value and service to our customers, helping the rail industry to work together to deliver a more cost-effective railway.

Our extensive supply chain network plays a crucial role in helping to run a safe and efficient railway.


Every year we:


  • Buy and deliver 2,000km of rail and 2.5 million tonnes of ballast.
  • Operate 1,200 rail vehicles.

Behind the scenes we:


  • Process £7,000,000,000 of payments.
  • Handle over 23,000 IT helpdesk calls.

Every year:


  • Mechanical and electrical locking fitters maintain 468 signal boxes and 387 ground frames.
  • Operational property helpdesk process over 200,000 calls.


We partner with our Network Rail routes and regions, delivering critical services and essential equipment to help get passengers and good to where they need to be.

Main Responsibilities

You will support the operational management of the supply chain to achieve compliant delivery of materials to agreed service levels.

Work with Materials and Logistics stakeholders to deliver and exceed customer requirements by processing all customer and supplier orders and resolving any queries.

Record and analyse data to facilitate the provision of management information.


What will you be doing?

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with all supply chain stakeholders (customers, suppliers, buyers) as needed to resolve customer and supplier queries, delivering supply chain KPIs
  • Support the wider operations team as required, to deliver a comprehensive service to customers as detailed in the service catalogue
  • Provide data, analysis and commentary for management reports.
  • Action and fully resolve customer and supplier queries to agreed processes and within SLA, monitor trends and collate data to support and identify supply chain improvements.
  • Develop and maintain processes for areas of activity to improve team performance and maintain the ISO9001 accreditation.
  • Using supply chain expertise and knowledge resolve complex queries by evaluating information and identifying the root cause.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent relevant work experience e.g. Supply Chain, Business Management
  • Experience of Internal Sales, and Experience of ERP systems (e.g. ORACLE, SAP)
  • Experienced Microsoft Office user
  • Experience within a customer service role
  • Proven ability to work to tight deadlines, maintaining high levels of accuracy
  • Good analytical and problemsolving skills
  • Good interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Good commercial awareness
  • A customer focussed approach
  • Ability to work under pressure and a desire to improve processes and produce efficiencies
  • Good oral & written communication skills
  • Awareness of supply chain processes

  • Railway knowledge
