Role Purpose:


This role relates to the supervision
of officers and staff within the Digital Media Investigations Unit and the development and delivery of digital investigation cases across the force through management of DFU case submissions.


The role includes supervising work alongside districts and departments in delivering
digital forensic strategies and by providing evidence and intelligence to officers and staff from the retrieval of digital devices.

You will provide expert advice and guidance to officers and staff concerning digital devices.


As part of the supervisory team for the Digital forensics' unit, you will also review, manage and prioritise through risk assessment, the digital case submissions from officers/staff who require examination and investigation of devices seized as part of criminal investigations.

You will Inspire and motivate people to deliver and develop digital investigative products and understanding.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Supervise, advise, and guide a team of Police Staff / Officers to ensure that digital investigations are carried out thoroughly, expeditiously and ethically in accordance with relevant legal requirements and investigation and partnership policies.
  • Advise Senior Investigating Officers on the most effective techniques to harness digital evidence and intelligence. Develop digital forensic strategies to support investigations into serious crime in conjunction with DFU, SPOC.
  • Review case submissions of digital forensic cases through priority basis and risk assessment
  • Encourage and promote the development and delivery of the DFU to effectively and efficiently embed improvements and contribute to the organisational development of the Force.
  • Identify opportunities through emerging or existing technologies developing processes to ensure they become investigative techniques, supporting South Yorkshire Police to meets its objectives.
  • Supervise and support all levels of investigations to maximise digital opportunities and provide tactical advice to investigators. Ensure efficiency and consistency and effective use of resources.
  • Assess threat, harm, and risk in order to develop and implement investigation plans and strategies.
  • Encourage, foster, and maintain a safe, inclusive, and effective learning environment to enable digital investigative improvements in line with our organisational values of fairness, integrity and trust.
  • Collaborate with internal colleagues and external partners/agencies to improve standards, and to share innovation and best practice.
  • Maintain a commitment to continuous professional development (CPD) within the DFU to ensure knowledge, skills and behaviours are maintained and enhanced amongst staff and officers.
  • Supervise the preparation of case files and the presentation of cases at court.
  • Keep up to date with legislation, policy and procedure, and liaise with colleagues in other Law Enforcement Agencies in order to share and learn from best practice. Ensure effective knowledge sharing across the department and Force to aid continuous improvement.
  • Manage and coordinate new and existing digital forensic methods that are subsequently brought under the accreditation of the digital forensic umbrella.
  • Promote the use of DMI's department as a significant source of intelligence and investigation, ensuring that operational officers and staff understand and are aware of the benefits, by:
  • Utilising the intranet to share news, updates, and practical guidance.
  • Supporting Crime Training to deliver DMI training
  • Delivering bespoke presentations, briefings and training as required.
  • Supervise the review of material of an obscene, offensive, or distressing nature, including indecent images of children.
  • Perform any other duties commensurate with the grade of the post and where necessary, given the rapid changes in technology and practices.
