An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Derbyshire County Councils Public Health department to support the work of the Health Improvement Team.

We are looking to appoint 8 Community Stop Smoking Health Improvement Advisors to join our multi-skilled team of delivery staff.

This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic and growing service which is looking for individuals with a passion and ability for supporting people to stop smoking.


The purpose of the role is to provide smoking cessation support to clients who wish to stop smoking in the community and support clients who may have additional support needs.

The post holder will be expected to undertake the following activities:


  • Independent delivery of telephone, digital and face to face behaviour change interventions
  • It is essential you are able to travel across Derbyshire and transport equipment when required. A driving licence and a vehicle you are able to use for work would be advantageous.
  • Provision of smoking cessation support, following specialist protocols to support clients who may have additional support needs or severe mental illness to achieve and maintain a quit status
  • Develop effective working relationships with mental health professionals and other professionals involved in the client's care
  • Liaise with the client's clinical team, including consultant psychiatrists, mental health support workers/nurses, GP etc to inform and update on client's quit attempt to support the need for mental health reviews and antipsychotic/antidepressant drug dose reviews.
  • Engage in reflective practice, supervision & training sessions to support quality delivery of smoking cessation support
  • Efficiently manage a caseload of clients who may have additional support needs
  • Adhere to safeguarding processes following disclosures of risk of harm to self or others and/or concerns relating to vulnerable adults
  • Support clients to identify health and wellbeing priorities and barriers that prevent their ability to access and engage with support opportunities and signpost/support the client to access support to reduce or remove such barriers.
  • To be actively involved in delivering training and support training to professionals in the community and mental health settings.


The post holder will be required to contribute to the delivery of the wider Live Life Better Derbyshire agenda that supports clients to identify and address their holistic wellbeing needs and provides weight management, smoking cessation and physical activity services across Derbyshire.


You will require:

  • Excellent communication and listening skills
  • Knowledge of behaviour change
  • A good understanding of factors affecting health, with experience of working with individuals and vulnerable groups within local communities
  • Experience of working independently and as part of a team.
  • A good level of IT literacy will also be required to maintain accurate client records and activities.
  • The ability to travel across Derbyshire
  • Flexibility in order to meet the needs of the service.
The role will include working 5 days of 7 and include evening and weekend working.

Provisional Interview Dates: 11th-13th June 2024

The job may require unsocial hours working including weekends and Bank Holidays. Payment arrangements will be detailed in any contract offer made.


Saturday and Sunday hours will be paid at plain time where it is part of your normal working pattern unless it is between 7pm and 7am, where enhanced rates of pay apply.

Enhanced pay rates are paid for Bank Holiday working.
