The Role


Thank you for your interest in joining the UK's National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA) as part of the North of Tyne Combined Authority (NTCA) Internet of Caring Things (IoCT) Programme.

We would love to hear from anyone with a keen interest in ageing and innovation to work on a North of Tyne Combined Authority part funded project to support the development of the world's first IoCT Cluster to support the region's businesses.


We are looking for a talented individual with excellent technical skills and domain knowledge or experience with behaviours, to provide specialist expertise to the world's first Internet of Caring Things Cluster in the North of Tyne region.

The ideal person will be passionate about technology and design, collaborative, eager to learn as well as share their experience with teammates, and will hit the ground running and help make an impact.

The National Innovation Centre for Ageing

The UK's National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA) at Newcastle University is funded by the Government and Newcastle University to create a world in which we all live better, for longer.

We team with innovation experts, industry, academics and the public, to identify, develop and bring to market data driven innovative business models, services and products, enhancing life as we age and developing new economic opportunities for organisations while promoting positive impact on society at scale.

The North of Tyne Combined Authority - Internet of Caring Things (IoCT) Programme

The IoCT Programme has been part funded by the North of Tyne Combined Authority for 5 years to assist businesses in the region to increase economic growth, create jobs in key NTCA sectors, and ultimately improve resident wellbeing through developing IoCT enabled products and services.

We are building, with partners, a World class innovation ecosystem providing economic and social opportunities and innovations, with a central focus on citizens and community that will mark the region as an international leader for IoCT innovation.

Key Accountabilities
Advise, build prototypes using a range of technologies to support IoCT Programme businesses.
Support the team on technology horizon scanning and dissemination of that knowledge.
Integration/utilising and/or building tools to support our community tool box and the gathering of data insights.
Maintaining and operating product demonstrations (including software/hardware/physical set & props).
Create and maintain documentation. Be curious and become an expert in the areas of ageing, longevity, innovation and commercialisation.

Working with the IoCT data scientist and the IT and digital team within NICA to ensure software and hardware compatibility.

Support delivery of business supports for IoCT programme looking to bring new products to support healthy longevity through technology and producing work of an exceptionally high standard Any other duties as specified within the grade.

The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience (Essential) Experience of working with and building strong relationships with commercial clients.
Communicating with other team members to establish effective pipelines and timely delivery of work.
Excellent creative problem solving, systems and design thinking skills.
Hardware development skills, across a wide range of technologies (e.g., audio-visual, haptics, robotics, displays, sensors, electronic circuit boards).
Ability to constantly learn and stay in touch with evolving technology and creative innovations. Experience of presenting to a wide variety of audiences, both in person and remotely. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Proven experience of a range of IT programmes.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience (Desirable) Experience of working and delivering in a fast-paced environment. Experience or understanding of the opportunities and challenges of working in healthy ageing and longevity.
Software Architecture Fundamentals in object-oriented design and data structures.
Agile/Scrum methodologies
Familiarity and experience using software version control.
Excellent scripting language skills
Consumer technology-based product development experience

Qualifications (Essential)
Degree in design / computer science / engineering and/or equivalent professional experience.
