Pay:
£20,812 pro rata


Hours: 22 Hours per Week

Plus additional hours during holiday playschemes

Safe, Stimulating and Fun Play Programme.


Job Purpose:


  • To work directly with children to assist them to avail themselves to the widest possible range of play opportunities.
  • To develop, plan and prepare play opportunities that will help children and young people develop skills, have fresh experiences and make new relationships, where appropriate using community based facilities.
  • To provide a fun, safe, caring and stimulating play environment for all children and young people aged 5-15 years. To enable their social, physical, intellectual, creative and emotional development.
  • To take responsibility for the playground's art & craft program, assisting other workers to organise structured play sessions, trips out, residential holidays etc.
  • Implement outcome based stars with children and young people producing individual action plans.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • To be responsible for organising art & craft activities both on and off site for children and young people.
  • To be responsible for ensuring that all members of staff, volunteers are part of the planned play programme.
  • To discuss with children what activities they would like and to organise them for and with the children.
  • To ensure we have adequate play resources.
  • To organise, with the full staff team, playscheme programs for school holiday periods.
  • To attend meetings in order to find out more about play development and partnership working.
  • To work with outside agencies to provide specialist workshops for children/young people to enhance their life experiences eg, music, drama, environmental, dance workshops etc.
  • To promote the playground as the stimulating, safe and fun environment that it is.
  • Ensure all play equipment is safe to use as part of daily health and safety checks.
  • To promote and ensure that other play workers are organising a creative and stimulating program of play for the children and young people.
  • Provide evidence that supports the work that is being done.

Play work

  • To listen to children and young people and to try to meet there needs and desires in relation to art and cultural opportunities.
  • To work directly with all children who wish to use the playground facilities to aid their personal and collective development through the medium of art.
  • To administer first aid treatment, recording and reporting of any incidents, accidents or treatment, and generally caring for children's well being.
  • To monitor and evaluate the arts opportunities that the service, provides for children and young people.
  • To jointly take responsibility for Health and Safety within the play environment by checking all play areas, equipment and reporting any worries or concerns to management.
  • To be jointly responsible for Health and Safety of all playground users and for keeping the facility clean and tidy.
  • To be responsible for playground equipment and to ensure that it is used properly and stored away safely in order to minimise damage and maximise play resources in line with current legislation.
  • To assist in identifying and obtaining resources for use on the playground.
  • To assist in the physical development of the playground.
  • To work within the Policies and Procedures of the Playground.

General Tasks

  • To be able to work flexible hours which will include morning, afternoon, evening and weekend work.
  • To support Volunteers, Work and School, College and University placements on the playground.
  • To promote the work of the playground and its positive impact on children and young people.
  • To act as an advocate on behalf of children and young people.
  • To carry out policies as agreed by the management committee which are consistent with the nature of this post and the level of responsibility.
  • To ensure the Playground is a Positive, Clean and Healthy environment for all.
  • To assist in the preparation of reports detailing work undertaken and identifying priorities for future planning.
  • To assist in fundraising on behalf of the management committee.
  • To liaise with appropriate statutory and non statutory agencies.
  • To contribute and take part in training initiatives as time and personal skills allow.
  • To partake in maintenance tasks in line with health and safety needs of the organisation.
