Balliol College ICT Department


Balliol College ICT Department provides local IT services to Balliol College and forms part of a larger collaborative group with a number of other Oxford University Colleges.

This collaborative group works together to provide best in class services to the group and shares a central data centre for all its processing and storage requirements.


Areas of IT activity within the College include:

software and hardware support for all users in College, whether staff, academics, students or others using computers; maintenance of the physical network (both wired and wireless); maintenance of College servers and systems; maintenance of the College's computer rooms; maintenance of College CCTV systems; maintenance of College telephone systems; liaising with external companies and contractors providing software and hardware solutions; maintenance of and compliance with IT policies in College; and supporting the College's web based activities.


The IT Support assistant will work across all the College's sites with the potential of also working at the other collaborative college sites and must therefore be able and willing to travel between sites as required - all sites are accessible on foot from Balliol.


We are recruiting a new IT Support Assistant who will be a key part of this team joining other IT professionals within the group.

This will be a busy and varied role with the post holder benefiting from gaining career experience across a broad range of technologies.


IT Support Assistant Duties and Responsibilities


To provide front-line IT support to student and staff users, and to assist the Systems Support Officer and Technical Manager in the day-to-day support of College IT services.


  • To provide support to staff, students, academics and visitors using the College and University IT services
  • To deal with common enquiries, especially those relating to Wi-Fi, passwords and printing
  • To troubleshoot problems with College IT equipment and members' personal devices
  • To troubleshoot problems surrounding any of the College's AV equipment.
  • To perform administrative tasks on CCTV and Door Access Control as required
  • Upgrading and maintaining computer hardware
  • Purchasing software and ensuring compliance with licensing agreements
  • Creating and maintaining end user documentation
  • To help with the induction of new College IT users
  • To assist with routine care of photocopier/printers
  • Provide IT Advice and help develop solutions for all members of the college. To develop strong working relationships with IT services staff in other areas of the University.
  • Any other tasks as required by the IT Director or as reasonably requested by the College commensurate with the grade of the post.

Essential Selection Criteria

Qualifications and Experience:


  • Educated to A Level equivalent or above
  • 1+ year's relevant experience in a similar role.

Skills and Knowledge:


  • A good working knowledge of Mac OS, Android, iOS and Windows Operating Systems
  • Basic knowledge of computer security practices, antivirus and antimalware software
  • Selfmotived and with a positive 'can do' approach to work
  • Ability to plan, prioritise and organise work
  • Ability to take initiative, establish priorities and multitask to deadlines with good attention to detail
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, with a customer focus
  • Ability to form professional relationships and able to interact effectively with colleagues at all levels
  • Ability to communicate well with nontechnical users
  • Resilient, able to work under pressure, and able to deliver technical solutions for customers
  • Able to work as part of a team and support team colleagues
  • Willingness to learn, develop and improve

Desirable Selection Criteria

  • Working knowledge of virtualisation technologies such as VMWare ESXi.
  • Familiarity with Windows operating systems including server and workstation.
  • Able to support a variety of AV and remote meeting equipment.

Qualifications and Experience:


  • Experience of Microsoft Windows in a networked environment
  • A basic understanding of Linux
  • Knowledge of network related protecols (DHCP, DNS, TCP/IP)

FURTHER PARTICULARS

Hours and location:
Full-time, 37.5 hours a week at Balliol College, Oxford.


Reporting to:
ICT Director


Salary:
The initial appointment will be made according to qualifications and experience within Grade 5: £27, ,348 per annum)


Holiday:

The post-holder will receive paid leave entitlement of 30 working days (in addition to Bank Holidays) during a complete holiday year, five of which are taken around Christmas and New Year.

The College reserves the right to require staff to work on Bank Holidays during full term, receiving a day in lieu.
