An exciting fixed term opportunity has arisen for a Behaviour Support Practitioner to join a newly established Intensive Support Team (IST) in Lambeth.

This MDT service will support adults with Learning Disabilities who are at risk of placement breakdown or hospital admission due to behavioural difficulties.

The team will sit within the local Mental Health in Learning Disability (MHLD) team and will work closely with the community teams in the borough.

The role will involve providing applied behavioural assessment and intervention for clients who present behaviour that challenges services and poses risks to their well-being, including specialist assessment, treatment, planning, implementation and monitoring of outcomes.

The pot holder will be supervised by a clinical psychologist and will be well supported by a larger department of behaivoural specialists.


Job Purpose:


  • To provide applied behavioural assessment and intervention for clients who present behaviour that challenges services and poses risks to their wellbeing, including specialist assessment, treatment, planning, implementation and monitoring of outcomes.
  • To employ the principles of Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) in all aspects of clinical work.
  • To participate in strengthening local services and developing capable environments though training, consultation and modelling.
  • To contribute to enabling other staff, service users and carers from diverse backgrounds to flourish by working to create a psychologically safe environment.
  • To provide clinical supervision and consultation as appropriate.
  • To participate in service evaluation, audit and research.
  • To work as an autonomous professional within professional and Trust guidelines and codes of conduct, and guided by the policies and procedures of the service, taking responsibility for own work including treatment and discharge decisions with support of clinical supervisor.
  • To plan and facilitate staff training and teaching, and presentations as appropriate
The Psychology & Behaviour Support service forms part of the Mental Health and Learning Disabilities (MHLD) Service.

Psychology and Behavioural Support Practitioners are under the Lead of the Consultant Clinical Psychologist, in conjunction with the Team Leader for the borough.

Clinical work is delivered within the separate borough teams (Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark).

There are opportunities to contribute to service developments and CPD opportunities across the boroughs and within the wider Trust, as agreed and under the direction of the Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Team Leader.

Lambeth and Southwark MHLD teams are located at the Maudsley Hospital.

This post is with the Lambeth IST which sits within the MHLD service.

The IST is a 12 month project involving the development of an intensive support team within the Lambeth MHLD team.

The team will be led by a principal clinical psychologist and include a speech and language therapist and occupational therapist as well as a behaviour support practitioner.

The team will work alongside the MHLD team and will offer focussed assessment and intervention to adults with learning disabilities whose behaviour places them at risk of placement breakdown and to prevent hospital admissions.

The team will also work closely with local providers to skill up existing services and develop capable environments with local providers.

Clinical and Client Care

  • To provide applied behavioural assessments, formulations and interventions for clients in MHLD/EIS who present behaviour that challenges services and poses risks to the wellbeing of the clients.
  • To work with family carers or with staff who provide direct support to clients to enable them to develop their skills to work effectively with individuals whose behaviour challenges.
  • To ensure that interventions and work with care staff or families of referred clients adheres to and actualises the principles of Positive Behavioural Support and is culturally appropriate.
  • To manage a clinical caseload taking responsibility for own work including treatment and discharge decisions with support of clinical supervisor.
  • To assess and monitor risk and draw up appropriate risk management plans.
Contributing to team or service clinical functioning

  • To contribute to the effective working of the MHLD/EIS and to the development and maintenance of a Positive Behavioural Support framework for the service.
  • To contribute to the team's delivery of accessible and acceptable services to diverse local communities.
  • To be proactive in challenging discrimination and support the development of culturally competent services.
  • To liaise with referrers, GPs and other professionals, and other agencies concerned with clients in order to develop and review care plans.
Policy and service development

  • To implement policies and procedures in own area of work.
  • To contribute to the consultation and engagement of service users in planning and delivering
