Project Title:
"When all is Tread and Done" Identifying footwear uppers caught on camera as a new form of evidence.

Project Description:

The aim of this project is to develop a searchable database of footwear upper and tread images under visible and infrared light.

The database will support the analysis and comparison of footwear captured in 'still' and 'moving' images (such as CCTV footage and phone downloads) with the results informing criminal investigations.

Role Description:

The aim of the project is to:

  • Research, test and utilise a broad range of imaging techniques, in various environments using a variety of lighting conditions, to accurately record and capture a wide range of footwear images.
  • Research, test and utilise commonly encountered CCTV systems in various environments to establish the most costeffective way of capturing images of optimum quality.
  • Research, test and evaluate the effect of an infrared light source on the appearance of footwear when applied from multiple distances, angles and/or multiple sources.
  • Research footwear designs to test intravariation between upper styles (for example, same colour, different materials; different colours, same materials).
  • Research, test and establish the most costeffective method (such as ecommerce resources) for creating interactive, 360° images of footwear for integration into a webbased footwear database.
  • Liaise closely with stakeholders to establish enduser requirements for this area of forensic practice, including the development of criteria that are searchable within a relevant footwear database.
  • Develop training materials, including a method/standard operating procedure for the capture and presentation of the footwear images under both visible and infrared light.

Mandatory:

Must have a suitable undergraduate degree of 2:1 or higher ideally in a discipline related to forensic science and/or imaging and photography.

Must already have obtained or be working towards a PhD or have equivalent, significant research experience.

Must have experience in organising and implementing a research project.

Must be willing to research various CCTV systems, image capture methods and the effects of infrared lighting.

Access to own transport and a willingness to travel to various locations when required.

Desirable:

Knowledge of, and experience using, photographic equipment.

Knowledge of validation and accreditation within a forensic context, including the development of standard operating procedures.

How to Apply:

Please submit a CV and covering letter which addresses both the mandatory and desirable criteria. If selected for an interview, these will be on the 7th June 2023.
