Description

Accessible Passenger Transport Services Ltd (APTSL) is seeking Volunteer Charity Trustees
Our Trustees will provide governance and direction to the future development of

APTSL following its conversion from a non-profit to a registered charity. You will help ensure we are meeting our charitable objectives and giving our service users the best possible experience. As a Trustee, you will act as an ambassador for APTSL.

About APTSL
APTSL is a Manchester-based community transport organisation established on a non
- profit basis to provide high quality transport services to adults and children with disabilities and for other charities and community groups working in this field. We operate a fleet of 75 minibuses accessible to wheelchair users using specially trained drivers and assistants. We operate from a base near the centre of Manchester and provide services across Greater Manchester. We have a team of 85 drivers and passenger assistants and a small management group.

The core of our operation was established to take over services passed over from

Manchester City Council's in-house operation.

These ensure that young people with special needs can attend school in safety and comfort, and that older adults who have difficulty getting around can access a variety of social care facilities.

We are in the process of registering with the Charity Commission.

Achieving this will give us the opportunity to expand the scope of our operations to provide a wider range of community transport services and benefits.

We require Trustees to help us achieve this aim.

About the Trustee Role

As a Trustee, you will actively contribute to giving firm strategic direction to APTSL, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.

You will work in partnership with the Management Team and support the employees, helping them achieve the aims of the charity.

Why Become a Trustee?

  • Be part of the team that delivers a valuable and appreciated community service
  • Play a fundamental role in the strategic development of the charity
  • Develop your own understanding of the management of a charity and the strategic decisions to be made
  • Enhance your network with people from a variety of backgrounds and continue to develop your own career.

What are we looking for?

As we are recruiting a new Board of Trustees, we do not have specific skills gaps that we are trying to fill.

However there are some experiences and skills which could be particularly useful, including:

  • Service marketing
  • Personnel/HR, training and skills development
  • Financial management/budgeting/audit
  • Personal experience of, or assisting people with, restricted mobility
  • Charity or corporate governance, including public sector.
  • Public relations, fundraising and marketing.
However, the most critical issues for us are energy, enthusiasm and empathy.

We are not expecting technical knowledge of transport operations, although that would be welcomed, as this will be part of the general induction and training that will be provided to our new Trustees.

Trustee Responsibilities
Charity Trustees have six underlying responsibilities.

These are serious but are not usually onerous:

  • Ensuring that the work undertaken delivers the charitable objectives and benefits the public community
  • Ensuring that the charity is run in line with its governing documents
  • Acting in the charity's best interests
  • Managing the charity's resources responsibly
  • Using reasonable care and skill
  • Making sure that the charity is accountable meeting statutory reporting requirements

How to Apply
Please send a short expression of interest detailing why you think this role is for you and what you could bring to the new Board

Disclosure and Barring check.
This is a volunteer position and any expenses will be reimbursed.
