Senior Buyer - Home Living (12 month FTC)

  • 12 Month Fixed Term Contract AE)


We are looking for a product obsessed, highly driven & inspiring leader to join team Home, as the Senior Buyer for Home Living.

You'll lead the buying team across these ranges - we are a major part of the market and need to show up for our customers all year round delivering our own branded Habitat products and branded products our customers know and love.


You'll be experienced at managing a junior buying team, and will have direct reports, along side collaborating with Merchandising, Design, Digital & Marketing teams.

You'll also be a confident experienced negotiator.


It's a fast paced & fun role - you'll be leading the category strategy along with the Head of Buying, and be leading the ways of working and how we interface with other functions.

Our Buying teams on General Merchandise are key to delivering our 'brands that deliver' strategy. Being part of the Home team allows for a fun and constantly evolving department.

Senior Buyers here at Sainsbury's have the freedom and autonomy to succeed. From the outset, you'll think quickly and act decisively. You'll build strong relationships with suppliers, implement the category strategy to maximise sales and improve margins. The credibility to influence at a very senior level in the business is vital.


As a Senior Buyer you'll:


  • Create and implement a customer driven strategic vision for their ranges in line with the category strategy with clearly defined and measurable initiatives
  • Liaise with global suppliers and sourcing offices to identify the most costeffective suppliers and to support overseas teams with own label product development
  • Deliver the own brand proposition through product design, product briefs, sourcing and negotiation of exclusive propositions to differentiate us vs the market
  • Using knowledge of markets and suppliers, inform the category budget and create and implement trading plans to achieve category strategy
  • Manage pricing across category to achieve a competitive position without compromising profitability
  • In conjunction with the Senior Merchandiser, develop and implement joint business plans with suppliers in line with department strategy and set specific performance targets for suppliers
  • Achieve optimum product cost through effective negotiation with suppliers
  • Lead and develop a high performing team. Motivating and develop the team to achieve more through coaching, succession planning and great career conversations
  • Play a pivotal role supporting the Buying Manager & Head of Department in key business cross functional projects

Our Buying team would love to see:

  • Strong commercial awareness and previous buying experience, preferably at Senior Buyer Level with experience on Toys/Books
  • Knowledge of systems and processes in a complex multichannel environment
  • Understanding of Legal, competition law, antibribery and corruption and Intellectual Property
  • Proven track record of delivery results to targets as an individual or within a team
  • Ability to identify market trends and opportunities
  • Working under pressure in a fast moving, dynamic retail environment
  • Strong team management and leadership skills
  • Impressive negotiating and influencing skills
