This is a fantastic opportunity to join a fast-paced environment as a Media and Communications Officer focusing on matters which affect almost every part of daily life.
Our purpose is to lead the IT profession through its ethical challenges, support the people who work in the industry, and to make IT good for society.
Working with our busy Media Relations and Policy Team, the Media and Communications Officer will be involved in everything from providing expert comments to journalists on breaking tech stories to explaining how BCS influences government policy.
You will liaise across the business to ensure messages reach the public as well as national and regional press/internal/external stakeholders via a multi-channel approach.
You will share responsibility for the smooth running of the Press Office - distributing comms, media monitoring, assisting with enquiries, contributing content and supporting policy driven projects.

In addition, your role will involve:
- Building relations with education, tech and other key correspondents.
- Making sure BCS' research on key issues such as diversity, education & skills and industry priorities are communicated effectively for mainstream audiences.
- Working with members to harness their expertise for media, policy makers and other content.
- Communicating our work effectively across our membership of 70,000
- Reacting quickly to breaking news often out of hours.
- Communicating our work and priorities across BCS member ship community and internally.
- Writing briefings and other web content as needed.
- Working with social media to assure our messaging and work is reflected across those channels.
Specific tasks:
- Managing and keeping media contacts/stakeholder data base up to date
- Preparing and distributing comms/updates for externally
- Assisting with media enquiries
- Sharing news of what the Press and Policy Team has been up to with members/council/trustees/Specialist Groups
- Monthly update 'In the News' for internal audience

- Skilled at promoting positive news and responding to press enquires
- Educated to degree level is desirable
Special conditions:
- Occasional travel, including overnight stays, to represent BCS at various events, lectures and interviews.
- Occasional requirement for out of hours work to cover evening events or deal with ongoing enquiries as necessary including availability for extended periods in a crisis situation.
