About the role


To provide excellent quality support and interventions to customers experiencing or likely to experience a mental health crisis as an alternative to using statutory crisis services.


  • To provide support to customers using Hestia's Recovery Café to reduce their crisis by offering a range of activities and interventions within the service during opening times (18:00 23:00 Monday to Friday and 12:00 23:00 weekends and bank holidays)
  • To motivate customers to identify causes of crises and to prevent these issues triggering crisis in the future
  • To develop simple yet effective safety plans with the individual users to proactively manage their mental health and wellbeing and to avoid the use of crisis services such as A&E
  • To carry out individual one to one sessions with customers and, where appropriate, to support them to develop their own wellness, recovery action plan
  • To assist customers to develop their social networks in order to attend mainstream or specialist educational, leisure and health related activities to support positive mental health and wellbeing in the future
  • To actively participate in continued professional development to be able to support customers with a range of mental health issues and associated impacts including thoughts of selfharm, drug and alcohol use and behaviour which may be experienced as challenging
  • To take an active role in supervision, reflective practice, appraisals, team meetings and other support mechanisms with the Team Manager outside of the operational hours of the service, in order to maintain resilience to be effective in this challenging yet highly rewarding environment.
  • To work closely with the Team Manager, Service Manager and Recovery Café Support Worker colleagues to provide a whole team approach to customers using the service
  • To promote and publicise the service appropriately in line with the service Communication Plan with support from the Team Manager
  • To coproduce the delivery of the Recovery Café with current and former customers and to support them to engage in Hestia's Service User Regional Forum (SURF) and the overarching Better Lives Forum, or other local user groups, as appropriate.
  • To take part in effective consultation with individual customers and groups of customers, both about local delivery and about organisational policy and procedures
  • Accurately record of customer visits, support and interventions provided and any outcomes
  • To maintain all other records relating to the upkeep and maintenance of the service, including building health and safety checks. This includes electronic based records.
  • To liaise with other providers of support and/ or treatment to the customers, in line with Information Governance Protocols, to provide multiagency support.
  • To have knowledge of and follow relevant legislation, policies and procedures

About you

  • Demonstrable experience of working with individuals who have experienced
mental health and / or dual diagnosis issues

  • Knowledge of issues affecting those individuals with a range of mental health conditions, how to communicate effectively with these individuals and how to support them with dignity and respect
  • Takes appropriate steps in empowering customers to make choices and take appropriate control for their mental health in order to achieve appropriate levels of independence
  • Understanding of the principles of recovery as an ethos and a range of recovery approaches
  • Ability to work as part of a team, on own initiative and to oversee induction of new peer staff and volunteers
  • Awareness of health and safety issues
  • Demonstrates commitment to coproducing service delivery with customers by ensuring that all activity is aligned to support customers to reduce their MH crisis and develop strategies for better mental health and welling in the future
  • Willingness to cook and share a meal with the customers of the Recovery Café
  • Good IT skills that includes a working knowledge of functions in MS Word, Outlook and the internet
  • Ability to complete and record basic financial transactions, i.e. managing petty cash
  • Knowledge and understanding of safeguarding issues and ability to address them appropriately
