Job summary:

Part of the Defence Safety Authority (DSA), the Military Aviation Authority (MAA) is the organization responsible for the regulation, surveillance, inspection and assurance of the Defence Air operating and technical domains.

It ensures the safe design and use of military Air Systems.


As the single regulatory authority responsible for regulating all aspects of Air Safety across Defence, the MAA has full oversight of all Defence aviation activity.

Through independent audit and continuous surveillance of military aviation, the MAA aims to provide the Secretary of State for Defence (SOS), through Director General DSA (DG DSA), the necessary assurance that appropriate standards of Air safety are maintained in delivering operational capability.

The MAA consists of 4 Divisions, this advertised role sits within the Certification Division.

The Certification Division has responsibility for: developing the regulation for and undertaking certification of all new military Air Systems and Major Changes as defined by regulation to type designs; developing the regulation for and undertaking assurance of aircraft Programmable Elements, structural, propulsion and systems integrity; the sponsorship, management and maintenance of UK Air System Certification Specification (Defence Standard ; and developing the regulation for and undertaking assurance of ships' aviation facilities and capabilities, acting as the Naval Authority - Aviation as defined in JSP 430.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.


Job description:


  • The MAA are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced engineering manager to lead the team responsible for ensuring that the UK's Military Air System standards remain fit for purpose for the current and future requirements of our Forces. This is an exciting opportunity to be at the cutting edge of technology, helping to shape the next generation of Air Systems and airworthiness standards for technologies such as artificial intelligence, autonomous operation and new manufacturing techniques.

Person specification:


  • Act as the MAA lead on airworthiness standards in support of the Certification of new UK military Air Systems and design changes, covering Fixed and Rotary Wing aircraft, Remotely Piloted Air Systems and aeroengines.
  • Coordinate the work of Certification Division technical specialists to deliver the UK default airworthiness specification, Def Stan 00970: Certification Specification for Airworthiness.
  • Act as the lead UK representative on international and NATO standards Working Groups including for the development of Remotely Piloted Air Systems Standards.
  • Act as the MAA liaison on airworthiness standards development with other international military and civilian Regulators and Standards Organisations, with particular focus on ensuring Def Stan adapts to new technologies
  • Manage a team of two civil servant technical authors responsible for the maintenance of Def Stan
  • Establish and lead a UK Military Airworthiness Standards Community of Interest Group comprising stakeholders from MOD, industry and the regulated community

Experience

Essential

  • You will be expected to have a strong AeroSystems engineering background.
  • You will need to be a registered Professional Engineer at I Eng level.
  • We will need you to demonstrate that you have experience of working in a leadership role in a team environment.

Desirable

  • Practical experience of working with certification standards will be an advantage.
  • We will welcome applicants with practical experience of the development or assessment of aircraft level performance and technical requirements.
