Job summary:


We are seeking a new Deputy Director to act as the organisation's Chief of Staff and Corporate Centre to lead teams across the Private Office, Comms and Corporate Centre.

This is an exciting and varied leadership position that will require you to work closely with, and advise, the Government Chief Scientific Advisor as well as the Director of GO-Science.

You will need to work across the organisation and with the rest of the GO-Science leadership to help ensure we deliver our objective of being an excellent organisation.

You'll be able to spot risks and issues, help ensure the communications and engagement of GO-Science is impactful and oversee corporate activities such as our governance, programme management and people work.

Job description:


This is an exciting and varied corporate and strategic leadership position that will allow you to play a pivotal role in enabling the effective operation of a dynamic team in ensuring Government is able to be more effective and efficient through better use of science and technology, and ultimately that Government can more readily improve the lives of people across the UK.


You will provide leadership for the corporate centre as well as the communications and Private Office teams, and therefore across a diverse area of topics.

This will involve managing a small team to lead on and support all corporate related matters to ensure the smooth running of the organisation and making GO-Science a great place to work - including across areas such as programme management, HR, finance, estates and our approach to the People Survey.

You will also oversee the Private Office and Communications teams and ensure the Government Chief Scientific Advisor has the service she needs to advise and support the Prime Minister and Cabinet across a range of science related issues.

It is a role that is pivotal in how GO-Science works, maximises impact and helps ensure our people can be the best they can be.

Specific objectives include:


  • Support the GO-Science leadership team to run the organisation effectively through wellestablished processes.
  • Overseeing key corporate activities ensuring that there is a robust business planning and financial process.
  • Lead all resourcing and people support activity, ensuring our people are adequately supported.
  • Oversee Private Office to ensure the GCSA is in the right place, at the right time. Supporting them to achieve strategic aims, and make sure their views & priorities are appropriately communicated, challenged and acted upon.
  • Oversee the communications team that provide an effective internal and external communication approach so that the output and direction of the GCSA and GOS is represented in the best possible way.
  • Drive corporate activities in areas such as D&I, Wellbeing, L&D, KIM and transparency and ensure that there are action plans in place for continuous improvement.
  • Ensure that our organisation is operationally effective across our multiple sites.
