Job summary:


DBT is seeking to recruit an additional Sector Specialist Adviser for the Midlands Region to complement other Advisers within sectors that are strategically important to the Midlands.


As a Sector Specialist Adviser, you will be expected to develop and deliver a program of activity that builds an effective export strategy to assist businesses to achieve commercial success overseas.


Advisers must have wide-ranging, senior level business experience within the sector, exporting experience and excellent commercial acumen, plus a desire to use this knowledge and experience to assist ambitious companies.

Experience of providing a consultative approach to solving issues and influencing decision makers is highly desirable in this role.


The government has ambitious goals for British exporters so the role will suit professionals motivated by, and with a strong track record of, exceeding challenging targets.


The Advisers will be supported by the Department's range of products and services, the Department's worldwide network and the department's strong team culture.


Job description:


Specialist Sector Adviser

  • Develop an Action Plan that aims to promote the opportunity for businesses within the sector to increase their exports, or start exporting for the first time.
  • Work with stakeholders and partners to further develop and promote the Department's services and provide practical support for UK businesses including trade missions, workshops, funding and networking opportunities. Record activities in an accurate and timely manner using the Department's CRM system.
  • Work closely with our Head Office Sector Teams to assist in delivering their plans, and to identify opportunities to provide additionality for Midlands based businesses.
  • Provide expert export advice to individual businesses within the sector.
  • Promote the Midlands as an area of expertise within the sector to overseas markets, and to coordinate the response to businesses opportunities identified by our team of Overseas Champions.

Hybrid working
Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas.


Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.


Most DIT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average.


Person specification:


Essential Criteria

  • Knowledge of the export process within the specific sector
  • International business development experience including various sales channels which might include agents and distributors, licensing, knowledge transfer and collaboration).


  • Influencing and selling

  • An ability to express ideas clearly (verbally, facetoface, by telephone, and in written communications). The role will also involve occasional public speaking and social media interaction.
  • Knowledge/Experience of Licensing, Technology Transfer and IPR issues.


  • Building relationships

  • Being adept at building relationships with client companies and other partner organisations and stakeholders with a focus on client service.
  • Analytical thinking and problem solving having the agility to accomplish a task by establishing an appropriate course of action, in often complex circumstances.


  • Planning and organising

  • A business professional who is able to manage and organize a work schedule which requires attention to detail with paperwork as well as managing a sizeable portfolio of clients.

Desirable Criteria

  • Knowledge/Experience of Licensing, Technology Transfer and IPR issues.
  • Knowledge/Experience of working in emerging markets or working oversea; and languages.
  • This role can involve visiting clients at their premises which can be located in areas difficult to reach by public transport. Therefore, use of a car and a clean driving licence is desirable.
