Description
Hello, we're Starling.

We built a new kind of bank because we knew technology had the power to help people save, spend and manage their money in a new and transformative way.

We're a fully licensed UK bank with the culture and spirit of a fast-moving, disruptive tech company.

We're a bank, but better:
fairer, easier to use and designed to demystify money for everyone.

Since our launch in 2014, we've opened over three million accounts and we've been voted Best Current Account Provider five years in a row.

We employ more than 2,300 people across our London, Southampton and Cardiff offices and will open our Manchester office in 2023.

We're looking for a Regulatory Affairs & Policy Associate to join our team; the role provides an opportunity to join Starling Bank and shape the Regulatory Affairs and Policy Function.

The Function exists to ensure that the Bank is on top of regulatory developments, that there are no surprises in our dealings with our regulators, and that we can lend our voice and experience to regulatory policy development.

You will be our second line expert in regulatory policy and engagement.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Helping ensure that the agendas and expectations of regulators are understood, communicated within and and met by the Bank.
  • Leading on escalation of relevant matters to the relevant Regulators
  • Supporting the Director of Regulatory Affairs and relevant senior management in engagement with the key Regulators.
  • Ensuring regulatory engagement (meetings, requests, escalation and queries) are carried out in the most efficient way.
  • Supporting colleagues in all areas of the Bank, including through providing training on regulatory engagement, expectations and supervision.
  • Ensuring the Executive and wider Bank are aware of impending regulatory initiatives and requirements and their potential impact, underpinned by clear horizon scanning.
  • Providing additional regulatory expertise to 1LOD and 2LOD colleagues.
  • Providing analysis and expertise to help influence Regulatory and Government policy development, including through direct engagement.

Requirements:

You'll be passionate about driving change in banking. Your knowledge of the regulatory environment will help Starling to drive continued improvements for customers, challenging industry norms. In particular, you will have

  • Experience of PRA or FCA supervision having worked in a regulator, consultancy or as part of an existing regulatory affairs function.
  • Broad knowledge of the UK framework for financial services regulation and the PRA/FCA Handbooks.
  • Experience of interacting with regulators.
  • Experience of interacting with Senior Management on regulatory topics.
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance risks, and understanding of these in the context of managing regulatory relationships.
  • Flexible and adaptable; must be able to juggle multiple competing priorities whilst managing expectations.
  • Self starter; proactive attitude, committed to continuous improvement and willing to drive different initiatives in a changing environment.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and a track record of building senior level relationships.
  • Strong influencing skills and an ability to manage change and react quickly with a view.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to challenge in a positive manner and handle difficult situations.
  • Excellent decision making, planning and prioritising skills.
  • You might also have experience of developing or influencing regulatory policy (e.g. banking, payments, fintech, credit)

Benefits:

  • 25 days holiday (plus take your public holiday allowance whenever works best for you)
  • An extra day's holiday for your birthday
  • Annual leave is increased with length of service, and you can choose to buy or sell up to five extra days off
  • 16 hours paid volunteering time a year
  • Salary sacrifice, company enhanced pension scheme
  • Life insurance at 4x your salary
  • Private Medical Insurance with VitalityHealth including mental health support and cancer care. Partner benefits include discounts with Waitrose, Mr&Mrs Smith and Peloton
