Description
We are currently recruiting for a Submissions Officer to work for Devon and Cornwall Police. This role will be based at their Ferndown Police Station in Dorset.

You will be working Monday to Friday 37 hours a week.


Principal Responsibility


Reporting to the Forensic Submissions Team Leader you will be responsible for processing forensic submissions within the South West Region.

You will provide an enhanced quality assurance and specialist advice for forensic submissions.

Additionally you will be responsible for ensuring that the region receives the best forensic result and intelligence at the best cost in accordance with the National Framework and the West Coast Consortium Forensic Contract (WCC).


In particular to:

  • To process forensic exhibits ensuring continuity is maintained and documented at all times.
  • To ensure that forensic submissions are assessed for evidential relevance and viability before sending to the appropriate laboratory, for appropriate tests, in terms of expertise and cost and in accordance with the WCC Contract
  • To provide a source of expert advice to specialist officers and staff across the region on forensic disciplines and examinations
  • To promote the Forensic Submissions Unit's work across the region and other outside agencies
  • To ensure invoices received within the unit from commissioned laboratories and other agencies are accurate and complete, that the appropriate budget code is identified and the accounts reconciled
  • To respond to a dynamic scientific and legal environment in identifying, recommending and introducing improvements to the forensic submissions process to assist key stakeholders
  • To research regional systems to ensure consistency and accuracy in information shared with stakeholders. Update and interrogate forensic systems to monitor and record submissions status.
  • Authorise submissions to Forensic Service Providers
  • To collate and prepare DNA hit intelligence packs in accordance with SFR requirements
  • To ensure that all duties undertaken are completed in compliance with ISO 9001 / 17025 as applicable.
All successful applicants will be required to submit themselves for drug testing in line with employing Force's Drug Policies.

In addition there are some functions that are intrinsic to the role.

An employer's duty of care and current legislation allows the Force to establish if a potential applicant could carry them out, either with or without reasonable adjustments.


These functions are:

  • Working with Disturbing Evidence/Observation of Disturbing Circumstances.


A medical assessment of the information provided in that questionnaire will be undertaken and may subsequently require a consultation with the Occupational Health Support Unit.

ESSENTIAL CAPABILITIES & EXPERIENCE

  • Experience of producing accurate written information that demonstrates a high level of attention to detail
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills at all levels
  • Be selfmotivated with the ability to work on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Ability to work under pressure with demanding workloads and deadlines.
  • Sound knowledge of the forensic submissions process and how it contributes to crime investigation and the criminal justice system
  • A good standard of computer literacy and a working knowledge of windows software including Microsoft Word
  • Experience of budget administration
  • Experience of working within a Forensic Submissions environment would be desirable
