Description
Together we are Trusted to Serve Scotland.

Do you care about the quality of Scotland's water? Would you like to join Scotland's premier water laboratory service?

At Scottish Water, we do a huge amount of work behind the scenes to ensure that Scotland has a constant and fresh supply of safe, high-quality water.

Laboratory sampling and analysis is one of the unseen activities our customers see, yet this service plays a critical role in the public health of Scotland.

A team of about 320 samplers, scientists and support staff provide an extensive analytical testing service.

Over the course of a year, the labs carry out tests at a rate of one per minute - both for Scottish Water and for other customers.

We're looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated Laboratory Assistant to join our Technical Logistics Business Improvement team. This is a permanent role based at Bullion House in Dundee.

What you'll be doing:

As the Laboratory Assistant, you will be responsible for assisting in the preparation and maintenance of our multiparameter sondes for measurement of final effluent water quality.

You'll also provide other support as required for the Senior Scientist in the ongoing development of field analysis.

As part of the role, you may be required to travel to site and help with installs, routine sonde changeovers or troubleshoot problems.

Your responsibilities may include:

  • To carry out disassembly and cleaning of the sondes.
  • To assist with calibration and reassembly of the sondes.
  • To assist with monitoring of sondes, tracking replacements and coordinating receipt / returns within the laboratory.
  • To carry out installs on sites as needed to assist in prompt delivery
  • To carry out sonde swaps or troubleshoot onsite as needed to maintain service
  • To support the senior scientist in delivering excellent customer service to our colleagues by working to the highest standards with regards to accuracy of data and traceability.
  • To support the Senior Scientist in completion of Management System Tasks.
  • To undertake regular stock checks, place orders as required & check incoming goods.
  • To maintain a tidy workspace and help develop the expansion of the service by developing best practice for organisation and layout of the work areas and stores in conjunction with the senior scientist.
  • To work at all times with the highest regard for health, safety and wellbeing, adhering to risk assessments, COSHH assessments and safe systems of work for the relevant task.

What you'll need:

Manual dexterity is essential for the role, and you'll need to have a good eye for detail and be able to work to documented procedures.

You'll have good problem-solving skills and be able to work on your own initiative but also understanding where boundaries lie with reference to documented procedures.

You'll need to engage with internal stakeholders and colleagues as part of the role, so it's important that you are a good communicator.

For your own safety, and the safety of your colleagues and our customers, you will follow Scottish Water's Health and Safety policies consistently and ensure 100% compliance with all relevant legislative, regulatory and SW policy requirements.

Some travel will be required, so a full UK driving licence is essential for this role.

It would be great if you have some further education in a scientific discipline, such as HNC/HND, and knowledge and understanding of water/wastewater processes, but this is not essential to be considered.

What you'll get:
The salary band for this role is £21,053 - £28,425 per annum (part time pro rata).

You can also expect:

  • 38 days of holiday per year (including public holidays) with the option to buy 5 more (prorata for parttime employees). Eligibility to join the defined benefit, contributory pension scheme. Annual company bonus. Life assurance scheme. Paid time off for community volunteering. Opportunities to be involved in sports, social and fundraising activities. Access to "SW Splash", saving you money on holidays, bills and shopping. Excellent family friendly policies around Adoption, Maternity, Parental Leave, and Flexible Working.
