Description

As a Children's Home Support Worker, you will play a crucial role in providing care, guidance, and support to children residing in a residential care setting.

Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the safety, well-being, and development of the children under your care.

This role demands empathy, patience, and a genuine commitment to making a positive difference in the lives of vulnerable children.


Key Responsibilities:

Direct Care and Support:


  • Provide daytoday care and support to children in the residential home, ensuring their physical, emotional, and psychological needs are met.
  • Assist children with personal care tasks such as bathing, dressing, and grooming, as needed.
  • Foster a supportive and nurturing environment where children feel safe, valued, and respected.

Behaviour Management:


  • Implement strategies to manage challenging behaviours effectively, utilizing positive reinforcement techniques and deescalation methods.
  • Work closely with the children to help them understand and manage their emotions, develop coping skills, and make positive choices.

Educational Support:


  • Support children with their educational needs, including homework assistance, tutoring, and encouraging participation in school activities.
  • Collaborate with teachers and educational professionals to address any learning difficulties or behavioral issues affecting academic progress.

Health and Well-being:


  • Monitor the health and wellbeing of the children, administering medication and first aid as required.
  • Promote healthy lifestyle choices, including nutritious eating habits and regular exercise, and organize recreational activities for the children.

Social and Life Skills Development:

  • Facilitate opportunities for social interaction and peer relationships, both within the residential home and in the wider community.
  • Teach life skills such as cooking, budgeting, and household chores, empowering children to become independent and selfsufficient.

Documentation and Reporting:


  • Maintain accurate records of each child's progress, including observations, incidents, and achievements.
  • Prepare written reports and participate in team meetings to discuss the children's needs and develop individual care plans.

Collaboration and Communication:


  • Collaborate with colleagues, including social workers, therapists, and other professionals, to provide integrated support to the children.
  • Communicate effectively with the children's families or guardians, keeping them informed of their child's progress and involving them in decisionmaking processes when appropriate.

Qualifications and Skills:


  • A minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent qualification; a degree in social work, psychology, or a related field is desirable.
  • Previous experience working with children or young people in a care setting, preferably within residential care or child welfare.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusting relationships with children from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage with children, families, and professionals.
  • Patience, empathy, and resilience to effectively support children with complex needs and challenging behaviours.
  • Knowledge of child development, traumainformed care principles, and safeguarding procedures.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team and adapt to changing circumstances in a dynamic environment.

Working Conditions:


  • This role involves shift work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to ensure 24/7 coverage and support for the children.
  • The work environment may be emotionally demanding, requiring sensitivity and professionalism when dealing with challenging situations or distressed children.
  • You may be required to undergo background checks, including criminal record checks and child protection clearances, as part of the employment screening process.
