We have an opportunity for a technically interested person to join the Research Computing Services (RCS) group as a Research Software Engineer (RSE) DevOps role for a period of 6 months.


This is an exciting opportunity that would suit someone who is coming to the end of their PhD program and looking to take the next steps into High Performance Computing (HPC) and/or Research Software Engineering.


Research Computing Services supports a wide range of research activities across the College and this opportunity will be to further the development of the RCS Self Service Portal software that underpins operations on a day-to-day basis.

Working with the RCS Platforms team and the RCS Research Software Engineering team you will have the opportunity to be exposed to how the large HPC platforms are designed and operate, and to learn best practice software engineering skills from the RSE team.


Duties and responsibilities:


  • Engage with the RCS HPC Platforms team and RCS RSE team to develop, test and deploy software that supports the operation of RCS.
  • Collaboratively select appropriate technology and system architecture
  • Employ bestpractice approaches to software engineering, including testing, issue tracking and version control
  • Assist with software deployment and maintenance
  • Write and maintain documentation to support ongoing use and development of the software
  • Effectively communicate progress, including regular reports
  • Work to agreed deadlines and prioritise daytoday tasks appropriately

Essential requirements:

You will be working with the RCS platforms team and the RSE team. As such experience of using high-performance computing platforms and associated software development is required.

  • Postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline
  • Experience of software development, including design, implementation and deployment.
  • Experience of using Unix based operating systems, tools and utilities
