Clinical Associate in Psychology (CAP) (Adults)


The Clinical Associate in Psychology is designed to deliver high quality, evidence based psychological assessments, formulations and interventions which are informed by applied research and evaluation.

CAPs work closely with our Clinical Psychologists within teams who supervise and are accountable for the CAPs work. The psychological work is delivered within dynamic multi-disciplinary settings. The current posts will be based within our Crisis Resolution Home Treatment Team (HTT).

We envisage it will incorporate:

  • Supporting communities, organisations and clients at a primary and community level. This could support a pathway into primary care and local communities, to build on community assets and to prevent the development of mental health problems. CAPs will work alongside other psychological professions in partnership with health, social care as well as the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector.

We believe strongly in staff development and have excellent opportunities to develop this through CPD opportunities across South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and through strong links with the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience.


The position is full-time which will include a structured programme of learning including work-based learning, personal study, academic learning, research and assessment.

The borough's pandemic response has required flexibility of psychological therapists in working remotely and face to face as required by the service.

Southwark is a borough of high social and psychological needs with considerable cultural diversity.

Mental Health services support an ethnically diverse group of clients, where English may not be their first language and who present with a wide range of common mental health problems at varying levels of severity.

Many clients present with multiple problems including social, housing and employment issues. You will be based at the Maudsley Hospital, Denmark Hill.


Job Purpose:

To undertake the requirements of the Apprenticeship for the Clinical Associate in Psychology.

This will be a structured programme of learning including work-based learning, personal study, academic learning, research and assessment, leading to the award of MSc for Clinical Associate in Psychology.

Completion of the apprenticeship will lead to award of the Masters Degree.

Training, supervision and work-based learning will be based on collaboration between South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and a specific Higher Education Institution.

The post holder will provide psychological interventions to the Community Mental Health Services.

In particular those with complex mental health problems, focusing on strength and assets to help people with what matters most to them.


Key Responsibilities:

To become able to work independently, initially under supervision, on a day-to-day basis. This work will be supervised and reviewed regularly with supervision being offered by a qualified Clinical Psychologist.

The characteristics of the core population receiving direct services are:

Psychological based provision is offered to the local/identified population at the individual, group, couple and family level through to teams, systems and community level.


The post holder will work with people who use our services to develop a shared understanding of the complex issues the person is facing, how they cope and the impact this has on their mental, physical health and well-being and those around them (psychological assessment and formulation).

Under supervision of qualified clinical psychologists they will explore social, psychological, therapies and other potential options which may improve health outcomes and help them achieve agreed goals.


Service users seen by the post holder will include those who have experienced high levels of distress and complex mental health difficulties.

Service users may present with a high level of risk to both themselves and sometimes to other people.

Assessments and interventions will be delivered in a range of settings, including community, Community and Voluntary and Social Enterprises (VCSE) as well as clinics and in person, by telephone or digital platform.


The post holder would be expected to work closely with experts-by-experience, local communities, Community and Voluntary and Social Enterprises, to co-produce and co-develop services.

The post holder will be involved in partnership working, liaising with various stakeholders in the system, e.g. GPs, primary and secondary care mental health services, colleges and universities, and the 3rdsector.

The post holder will also be involved in raising the awareness of the complexity of the health and social challenges many people face and the impact this has on mental health & well-being and vice versa.
