Job summary:


We are recruiting a Head of Business Management role, who will lead and manage a team providing business support to the Chief Financial Officer senior leadership team (Directors and Deputy Directors).


This is an exciting time to be joining the newly formed Chief Financial Officer (CFO) directorates in the Department for Business and Trade.

Our directorates are responsible for delivering a broad portfolio of functions including finance, security, business services and grants delivery.


You will play a key role in making our new directorates a success by managing our corporate and governance responsibilities.

You will work closely with the newly appointed Chief of Staff to ensure that structures and processes are well set up and embedded across our teams.

This role will involve supporting the directorate leadership team to ensure they have a well-functioning and well-managed directorate. You will also lead a team of four business managers who directly support our Deputy Directors.

We are looking for a proactive self-starter with a head for numbers.

You will work closely with corporate services teams across the department, primarily Finance and HR to ensure that our directorates are making the most of the resources available.


Job description:


  • Ensuring that the CFO Directorates meet their corporate obligations effectively on HR, finance and other business processes, including timely fitforpurpose returns provided to corporate exercises.
  • Shaping and coordinating input into directorate wide initiatives such as induction, standups, and other corporate events.
  • Developing and submitting fitforpurpose business planning returns as needed, and regular financial forecasting.
  • Ensuring that key actions on ways of working in the Directorate are followed up effectively, including those arising from People Survey feedback.
  • Managing the processes for Directorate around talent, in year rewards system and results.
  • Providing secretariat support to SLT, working with the Chief of Staff to ensure agendas reflect key policy and management issues, following through actions and monitoring delivery.
  • Building a strong, productive relationship with the senior leadership team, supporting the Director to meet their corporate responsibilities effectively.
  • Line management of four HEO business managers, providing them with effective leadership and direction, and making sure that they work well together to help ensure efficient running of the directorates.

Person specification:


Essential Criteria

  • An ability to lead a dispersed team and ensure that staff are motivated and contributing effectively to the work of the department.
  • A proven track record of collaborating effectively in complex areas and with uncertainty.
  • Previous experience of managing budgets and effectively communicating financial information.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret data in a way that is appropriate for senior leaders.
  • Experience of building strong relationships across organisational boundaries
  • Ability to horizon scan, identify and mitigate risks before they materialise

Desirable Criteria

  • CCAB qualified accountant or working towards a qualification
