Job description

Natural England's mission is 'building partnerships for nature's recovery'.

Central to the delivery of that mission is excellent external engagement, reaching, informing, and inspiring current and future partners and public audiences.

We are recruiting for a Senior Adviser to join our Private Office and External Affairs team, who are responsible for putting our ambitious Communications and Engagement Strategy into action.


This small team works closely with senior leadership in a fast-paced and stimulating environment at the heart of the organisation, and with colleagues from Defra group Communications who provide specialist communications services, ensuring that all of our interventions combine to achieve our long-term outcomes.

The cross-cutting nature of our team's work means involvement across all areas of Natural England.

Our supportive team culture encourages innovation and creativity alongside high standards and the ambition needed to build partnerships for Nature's recovery.


This postholder will have particular focus on our strategic stakeholder engagement work, working closely with the Principal Advisers in our team, providing advice and leadership to colleagues at all levels for high quality, impactful relationships that deliver results for people and nature.


We're seeking a highly motivated individual with excellent communication and project management skills to join our national, dispersed team working across the whole of England.


  • Be part of the team driving forward activities in support of our organisational Communications and Engagement Strategy.
  • Be the organisational lead for the rollout of our Stakeholder Relationship Management System, working across the organisation to ensure the system is used as the primary source of information. With support from a lead adviser, you will oversee leadership support, the relationship with contractors, onboarding of new users, good quality data entry and reporting.
  • Use excellent written and spoken skills to create impactful communications that resonate with the audiences we need to reach to build partnerships for Nature's recovery. This will include supporting senior leaders in their communications, such as speeches, blogs and media articles, and ensuring consistency of messaging across the organisation.
  • Oversee our strategic relationship manager structure, keeping information current and accurate and providing guidance to our relationship manager cohort on the priorities of the role.
  • Provide leadership on strategic stakeholder products, newsletters, and interventions, ensuring they are fit for purpose, creative, impactful and reaching their intended audiences.
  • Oversee strategic stakeholder events across a range of themes, working with colleagues across the organisation.
  • Provide strategic leadership for colleagues across the organisation on stakeholder mapping, acting as a source of knowledge and leadership on what good engagement looks like and ensuring join up across areas of work for maximum benefit.
