Job Summary.
To be responsible for the delivery of safe and effective quality care across the nursing home. To be responsible for ensuring the service is compliant in all regulatory aspects.

The post holder will deputise for the Care Home Director in their absence.


To support the staff teams to maintain the highest standards of care and be responsible for ensuring the completion of audits to monitor standards relating to that care.

To liaise closely with statutory and other external stakeholders in managing and maintaining occupancy across the service.

To provide leadership and professional development for the nursing and care teams within the service.

To provide nursing leadership within the implementation and evaluation of all education, training and development of staff. To develop, implement and evaluate policies, guidelines and protocols for the management of resident care.


To ensure the Home is a learning organisation and that all aspects of the service are delivered in line with current best practice.


Role and responsibilities

  • To be responsible for the quality of nursing care across Home.
  • Implement an effective recruitment and retention plan to ensure that the workforce is in place to meet the needs of residents. To manage staffing across the division on a day to day and long term basis to ensure effective use of resources. This includes responsibility for the duty rotas, annual and study leave, bank and agency usage.
  • Undertake effective staff recruitment, supervision and development. Investigate any issues of conduct, discipline, and performance within their areas, in accordance with policies and procedures, in liaison with the Care Home Director.
  • Maintain pay and nonpay budgets within agreed controls and contribute to cost improvement programmes and initiatives.
  • Maintain a safe and acceptable environment for residents, visitors, students and staff, reporting and taking appropriate action on any hazards, accidents, care/other incidents, faulty equipment or inadequate standards of housekeeping. Coordinate the reporting of all such incidents.
  • To act as the Safeguarding Lead within the service, managing safeguarding practice across the service and undertake full and responsive investigations into any incidents to ensure learning and service improvement.
  • To investigate and respond to informal and formal complaints in a timely manner encouraging an open and learning environment.
  • Work collectively within the Senior Management Team at the Home to ensure effective service delivery.
  • To ensure safe custody and administration of medications in accordance with organisation policies and procedures and all current national guidance.
  • To participate in meetings and project work as identified and delegated by the Care Home Director including drafting effective reports.
  • To maintain and provide information and data as required, to parties such as Trustees, local authority and Clinical Commissioning Group as required.
  • To at all times act as a nursing role model for the nurse team, to be an expert in clinical practice and be an aspirational and leader.
  • To participate in direct patient care as required.
  • To work closely with relatives and nominated contacts to ensure individualised resident focussed care.
  • To obtain and respond to resident and other feedback.
  • To develop effective working relationships with parties such as GPs, pharmacists, clinical leads in the community services to improve service delivery.
  • To ensure that nursing documentation is maintained to a high standard and to ensure that appropriate audits of documentation are completed. Be a competent user of and participate in the ongoing development of any Electronic Patient Records.
  • The post holder will deputise for the Care Home Director as required and take part in the out of hours, telephone oncall support for the service.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential Requirements:


  • RGN / clinical registration
  • Extensive nursing experience and extensive care home management experience
  • Excellent communication skills
  • High levels of clinical expertise supported by qualifications and ongoing development
  • An effective motivational leadership style
  • Ability to achieve effective improvement within staff teams and across the service
  • Good budget management, cost control and resource management skills
  • Computer literate (Outlook, Word and Excel)
  • A personcentred approach to resident care
  • Ability to engage and inspire a workforce within a challenging healthcare context
  • Ability to take the initiative and draw up improvement plans across all clinical and operational areas within the service
  • Ability to maintain and improve upon a clinical audit and governance framework
