Band 4 MDT Coordinator

This is an exiting opportunity to become part of the busy but rewarding Cancer Pathways Team.


The successful applicant will be responsible for the management and oversight of a tumour site, ensuring patients receive the best possible care and experience through their cancer pathway.


You will be responsible for ensuring that the patient cancer pathways are monitored in accordance with the government national cancer waiting times targets and for actively escalating any patient who is at risk of breaching, and having an up-to-date knowledge of all the patients on the 2ww pathway.

You will also be responsible for coordinating and organising the activities of the Multidisciplinary Teams (MDT) and team meetings.

This will include liaising with all the departments that are involved in providing care and core services to cancer patients.


You will be expected to work in collaboration with all members of the multi-professional team and departments providing the relevant cancer services.

This also includes working with senior management and external organisations.

Main responsibilities:

Data collection for cancer waiting times monitoring (patient tracking):

  • Monitor and report on all cancer patients, whether they are newly referred or undergoing recurrent treatment, with additional specific requirement to monitor and report on consultant upgrades and national screening programmes.
  • To update every day, the cancer waiting times database (Infoflex) for monitoring of the government cancer targets.
  • To have extensive knowledge of national cancer waiting times targets and specialist knowledge to coordinate and manage the patient pathway with little supervision.
  • To keep detailed timelines for all patients on the suspected cancer pathway and have the ability to keep these updated daily.
  • To establish and maintain a record of all newly diagnosed cancer patients. Collate and compare information from a variety of sources such as pathology, surgical, chemotherapy and radiotherapy reports.
  • To use specialist knowledge of the patient pathway to proactively determine timelines and use high levels of communication to expedite appointments/procedures as necessary and to resolve issues which could lead to target failures.
  • To have the ability to anticipate what the next step may be in a patient's pathway and have responsibility for actioning this alongside the appropriate service managers.
  • To have an extensive knowledge of the most up to date Cancer Waiting Times dataset and to use this knowledge to make appropriate adjustments to the patient pathway.
  • To facilitate collection of the National Cancer Dataset (Cancer Waiting Times Dataset) by:
  • Collating information from proformas, case notes, clinics and MDT meetings.
  • Discussion with clinicians and clinical nurse specialist.
  • Discussion with members of the CAT teams, PPMs and DMs.
  • Electronic retrieval of data from a wide range of in house clinical information systems.
  • Electronic retrieval of data from external clinical information systems.
  • To communicate complex information/situations relating to patient pathways to a wide range of health professionals and use own initiative to seek professional advice as needed and autonomously act upon that information. This will include the ability to negotiate with a range of departments.
  • To gain extensive knowledge of medical terminology and procedural processes, to assist in the collection of data for all suspected cancer patients.
  • To look in depth into patient cases, whose contents are regularly upsetting and concern end of life care and have the ability to deal with this on a personal level.
Escalation and Pathway Improvement

  • To be responsible for identifying any patient that is at risk of breaching their cancer waiting time target, and escalate these patients following the process of the agreed escalation policy.
