Public Education Officer


Hours:0.4 FTE (occasional weekends may be required), 15-hours per week


Reports to:
Short Course Director


Contract length:
Fixed-term until April 2025 with a view to be extended based on funding


Salary:
£30,000 - £33,000 pro rata


Benefits:28 days holiday + bank holidays + Christmas shutdown (pro rata)


Location:
Talgarth LD3 or remote with ability to travel to Talgarth on a regular basis.


Background of BMC:

Black Mountains College (BMC) is a unique rural college based in the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park. BMC re-imagines what education is for and how it is delivered. Our approach connects the environment, society and the individual to produce rounded, resilient future leaders and change-makers.

We are now in our third academic year and have students of all ages and backgrounds participating in our NVQs, varied short course programme and our degree - BA (Hons)

Purpose of the role:


The Public Education Officer will work closely with the Short Course Director to design and deliver an online course for creative practitioners in Europe and the UK, and support in developing, running and growing our own Short Course programme.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Work alongside the Short Course Director to deliver the following 3 areas of work:

1. Support the creation of an online course for creatives in the Wider Europe region


In collaboration with the British Council and their partners, BMC will be designing and delivering an online course for creative practitioners in wider Europe and the UK.

Together with an innovative VLE design company we will create an engaging, immersive and action-oriented course through which a group of international participants explore how their creative practice can catalyze radical change towards a more ecologically viable world.


You will:

  • Support an R&D phase in which the learning objectives and teaching methods are identified.
  • Manage relations and connections with stakeholders from the arts and creative industries in Wider Europe.
  • Visit the region to meet said stakeholders (in May/June 2024)
  • Contribute to the course design and communicate with the VLE technicians as well as course contributors to create the course content and structure.
  • Contribute to the online course delivery as a facilitator.
  • Manage the evaluation process and contribute to the final report
  • Manage administrative duties related to the running of the
- project.


2. Running the delivery of the BMC Public Education Programme
Support with the running of our current short course programme. We currently run approx.

10 workshops a year, which cover a range of topics from practical skills like composting, tree planting and regenerative growing to more in-depth explorations of how to transform systems that are exacerbating our unsustainable economy and how to adapt and prepare for an uncertain future.

We offer one-day workshops, residential camps and bespoke training online and at our main site: a 120-acre hill farm in Talgarth.


You will:

  • Communicate with tutors to enable them to run their planned course.
  • Communicate with student ambassadors who assist the course on the ground
  • Monitor and manage ticket sales online
  • Liaise with customers and attendees
  • Support our comms department by researching and developing targeted channels for promotion of each of the courses
  • Manage the postcourse evaluation with both course participants and tutors.
  • Support the organisation of our annual Ecological Futures Camp, in which 25 young people come together for a 5day residential on our farm to learn about climate action and adaptation through creative, handson, outdoor learning.

3. Support the growth of the BMC Public Education Program
After having run short courses for three years, we are now in the position to significantly expand our offer.

We are looking to develop a series of external courses for a range of professional sectors and need someone to support this expansion.


You will:

  • Assist in the strategic development of informal adult learning in a wide range of community / professional contexts.
  • Respond to the many requests we get from companies and organisations to develop a
- bespoke course offer.

  • Support the development of our signature offer, based on research of both the existing market and societal contexts where climate literacy, and climate action and adaptation education is most needed / impactful, to generate a future in which nature and human societies thrive.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • At least 2 years' experience in creative, environmental, and/or education projects.
  • An interest and commitment to issues relevant to the environment and climate change.
  • Knowledge and expertise in the arts and creative industries
