The Combe Grove Estate came under the guardianship of the Elmhurst Foundation Charitable Trust in March 2017 with 3 principle aims to practice and increase knowledge in the field of health and wellbeing, create 90 high-quality enhanced apprenticeships and to share facilities and expertise for the benefit of the local community.

Our stunning location informs all that we do. Located within 70 acres of woodland and meadow, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Bath.

The Team combines the latest medical research with the restorative power of nature to help those who pass through the Estate to reconnect with the primary needs of mind and body and leave with a greater sense of wellness, increased vitality and a sense of restored calm.

About the role


We are actively recruiting for a Level 2 Countryside Worker Apprentice to join our amazing team in partnership with our chosen training provider who are a centre of excellence.


You will be reporting to the dynamic and high-performing Estates management team of dedicated and driven team leaders who are experts in their field and will mentor you through your learning journey.


Working as custodians of the Estates rural landscape and wildlife the Countryside Worker Apprentice will be dedicated to specific environmental and conservation work using countryside management practices.


The role involves and is not limited to:

  • Managing habitats using a range of specialist techniques and sustainable practices.
  • Identifying the flora and fauna native to our area to determine the appropriate habitat management that is needed.
  • Completing a range of surveys, including of habitats and species, that inform the Estate management plans.
  • Creating and maintaining the Estates rural furniture such as pathways and also hedging and fencing that creates protected areas to allow the flora and fauna to thrive undisturbed.
  • Completing practical work using a range of hand and powered tools following safety and maintenance training.
About You

You are consistent and dependable with a commitment to maintaining high standards.

You have a positive approach to working outdoors and undertaking practical tasks in all weathers.


You have a solution focussed approach to problem solving and a drive to work within and to strengthen a close knit and positive team culture.

You must have strong time management skills, demonstrating reliability and punctuality.


You have a keen interest in permaculture practices and experience in developing your knowledge within animal care, wildlife, or conservation.

You have A level qualifications and also English and Maths GCSEs at grade 5 or above.

The Apprenticeship


Prior to enrolment with the apprenticeship training provider, you will undertake an internship to familiarise yourself with Combe Grove and all that we do, our land, food and people.


With this varied and exciting role, you will study towards a Level 2 Countryside Worker Apprenticeship with our chosen training provider.

You will have 6 hours paid study time each week to focus on your off the job learning. This Apprenticeship includes Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environment Management.

Enhanced Learning


We will arrange paid work placements for you with our strategic business partners to experience other companies and enhance your learning.

We also arrange volunteering and community days which apprentices attend together to widen your experience.


Following successful completion of your End Point Assessment you will be supported in career coaching and further development so that you are in the most advanced position to compete for the best roles in the industry on completion of your apprenticeship.

In addition, you will receive the following qualification and training:

  • First Aid


You will be required to complete and upload relevant evidence to the appropriate e-portfolio system to document your progress and maintain records for off-the-job training.

Future Prospects


Once qualified you will be in an advanced position to progress into a variety of roles on your career path such as Horticulture Supervisor Apprenticeship, Assistant Gardener or Plant Care Technician.

Working Times


Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship we provide an additional 3 months of career coaching and support with job searches so that you are in the strongest position to complete for the best jobs in the industry.

Salary

Internship - up to £21,750

Enrolment Entry salary - for the first 3 months from enrolment £14,000

Probation Review - for the remaining 9 months of year 1 £14,500

Gateway - 3 months to prepare for the End Point Assessment, up to £21,750

Combe Grove Career Coaching - 3 months of career coaching £22,750
