Description

About the role:

A project recently funded by InnovateUK, aims to transform access to renewable, reliable, affordable energy through the development of land based kinetic hydro river turbine system.

Kinetic Hydro Ltd. have prototyped a small, efficient river turbine that is cheap and reliable.

It will be easy to transport, install and maintain and can make a significant contribution to delivering affordable, sustainable energy to off-grid communities in the Global South.

These power levels can also stimulate local economic impacts in off-grid locations by powering water pumps, agricultural processing equipment, light industrial machinery, and other productive uses of power.

Access to clean power, such as from the river turbine, is a key enabler of gender equality, freeing women and children from household work and dependence on traditional fuels, as well as reducing the associated adverse health outcomes.

The outcome of this Energy Catalyst early stage project is to further de-risk our technology, develop methods to identify suitable deployment sites quickly and cheaply, assess in depth the market opportunity in Uganda, and conduct the preparatory studies and design work needed for the future implementation of a pilot project.

Project partners include Practical Action, based in Kenya, and The Challenges Catalyst Ltd, based in the UK.

Our role in this project is to develop methods of hydro-kinetic resource assessment based on geo-spatial data.

This includes data that is acquired from space-based Earth Observation satellites that can be converted into relevant and useful information to understand and identify river properties and characteristics that are optimal for this river turbine system.

We will develop a prototype information service that we will deploy on a cloud based processing platform, enabling users to interface and interact with the service and provide important feedback.
