Description
Provide highly specialised diagnostic cardiac ultrasound scans and reports.

Work as an independent practitioner in the field of echocardiography with a variety of ultrasound tests providing reports to assist clinicians in the management of patients.

Work alongside the echo lead and clinical service manager providing support and a proactive approach to review and redesign the echo service as necessary in keeping with service demand also to help in the future planning of the echo service.


The role includes teaching, assessment and supervision of junior physiologists/healthcare scientists, medical students, and qualified medical staff working on a one-to-one basis.


The post holder will be expected to:

  • Provision of echocardiography, independent scanning and reporting. The Trust is sourcing additional accommodation on an alternative site to both complement the present service and to increase capacity.
  • Provide highly specialised diagnostic cardiac ultrasound scans and reports. Work independently providing accurate and detailed ultrasound imaging and reports to assist clinicians in the management of patients. Work alongside the senior echo team and clinical service manager to provide support, innovative strategies and a proactive approach to audit and redesign the echo service to keep pace with the constant changes and adaptations to service demand and the future planning of the echo service.
  • The role includes teaching, assessment and supervision of junior physiologists/ cardiac scientists, students on the scientist training programme, medical students, and qualified medical staff working on a one to one basis

  • Communicate effectively with all staff, patients and carers.
  • Develop good working relationships with other departments both within Cardiology, the wider Trust and external companies whose business we utilise.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team working. The post holder will require excellent verbal and written communication skills to enable clear explanation of procedures to a variety of patients from different backgrounds and needs. The post holder will also need to be able to communicate effectively on matters relating to patients with staff in other departments in the Trust. This patient information will routinely be complex.
  • Assist with organising timetables and clinic lists to fully utilise available resources.
  • Plan and prioritise workload across all procedures. Help with the triage of echo referrals
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of departmental protocols and procedures to provide a high quality service.
  • Provide specialist expertise across a range of standard transthoracic echocardiography and support with willingness to train in transoesophageal, stress, contrast, 3D, paediatric and congenital echo.
  • Work as an independent practitioner within the team.
