Locum Consultant- Histopathologist - Manchester, United Kingdom - The Christie NHS Foundation Trust

The medical establishment is made up of 10 consultant Histopathologists, with junior support from the deanery rotation and clinical fellow post.
The appointee will be based at The Christie and together with colleagues already in post and will provide senior input to all Lymphoma histopathology work to meet the needs of the service.
The successful applicant will share the diagnostic workload with the other consultant histopathologists and give input into the relevant multidisciplinary team meetings (MDTs).
The Department of Histopathology provides diagnostic tumor pathology services to the Christie NHS Foundation Trust.This includes handling biopsies and surgical specimens from the theatres, wards, and out-patients within the hospital, as well as reviewing pathological materials from other hospitals in the North West for cancer patients referred by clinical, surgical, and medical oncologists.
The GM-HCDP service (Lymphoma) also receives diagnostic case material from GM Trust and in-house generated samples, with plans for further onboarding of external GM Trusts.
It is important to note that all neoplastic myeloid pathology is reported elsewhere, so participation in reporting these samples is not required.
There is no on-call rota or requirement for weekend work.The Christie is one of Europe's leading cancer centres, treating over 60,000 patients a year.
We are based in Manchester and serve a population of 3.2 million across Greater Manchester & Cheshire, but as a national specialist around 15% patients are referred to us from other parts of the country.
We provide radiotherapy through one of the largest radiotherapy departments in the world; chemotherapy on site and through 14 other hospitals; highly specialist surgery for complex and rare cancer; and a wide range of support and diagnostic services.
We run one of the largest early clinical trial units in Europe with over 300 trials every year.
Cancer research in Manchester, most of which is undertaken on the Christie site, has been officially ranked the best in the UK.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The appointee will have office accommodation and access to a secretarial service at the Christie.Diagnostic histopathology

a) biopsies and surgical specimens from the theatres, wards and out-patients in the hospital
b) pathological material for review from other hospitals in the North West for cancer patients referred to the clinical, surgical and medical oncologists. The GM-HCDP service (Lymphoma) similarly receives diagnostic case material from within GM Trust and in-house generated samples. Further onbaording of external GM Trusts is planned.
Clinical reporting inlcudes use of both local LIMS (TDHC) and HODS regional LIMS haemato-pathology platform (note, all neoplastic myeloid pathology is reported elsewhere and participation in reporting of these samples would not be required.
Consultation is also provided on problematic cases, referred by other histopathologists within, and occasionally outside, the region.There is no on-call rota or requirement for weekend work.

On 21st June 2014, The Christie NHS Foundation Trust entered into a partnership with Synlab UK Limited, the UK division of one of the largest European independent providers of pathology services, to provide and develop Christie pathology services.
