Description

WDC is seeking a strategic and collaborative policy expert with the passion to end the suffering of whales and dolphins.

This new role will shape and lead WDCs campaigns to protect cetaceans from noise pollution, vessel strikes, offshore developments and energy extraction.

Key working relationships


Internal work closely with Safe Seas and broader C&P team, working closely with staff from all WDC departments and international offices.


External managing external consultants, engaging with a wide range of stakeholders including government departments, academia, NGOs, corporate and strategic partners, funders and the media.


Main tasks:

Lead delivery of specific activities aimed to protect cetaceans from offshore developments, noise, vessel strikes and deep-sea mining

  • Assist the development of effective strategies to protect whales and dolphins from adverse anthropogenic activities, in particular offshore developments, noise, vessel strikes, disturbance and deepsea mining,
  • Proactively engage with stakeholders and represent WDC in external meetings, NGO networks, political arenas and at national and international fora to influence positive changes.
  • Undertake engagement with businesses and industry representatives where relevant.
  • Collaborate on intergovernmental engagement work and attend international meetings where needed, such as the IWC.
  • Proactively identify and take forward initiatives that capitalise on opportunities which will end the suffering of whales and dolphins which are the result of damage to or human action in the ocean.
  • Maintain an understanding of social, legislative, scientific and policy developments relating to cetaceans and their environment, particularly those relevant to accidental human impacts to the ocean.
  • Work together with WDCs international offices where appropriate and update internal staff about programme developments and plans.
  • Proactively build and maintain collaborative relationships with policymakers, industry and other key stakeholders with the aim of achieving positive changes in policy and practice.
  • Engage with emerging policy priorities such as compensatory measures for offshore wind and marine net gain.
  • Write or coordinate the publication of papers, reports and other communications which uncover problems and demonstrate solutions to protect whales and dolphins living in the ocean to inform and influence decision makers, the public and other stakeholders.
  • Act as a media spokesperson as required.

Work alongside the Fundraising and Communications teams to deliver WDC objectives

  • Work with the Communications team to develop communications strategies and campaigns which engage our supporters, followers and wider audiences.
  • Work with the Fundraising team by engaging with potential and current donors and partners, as well as maximising funding opportunities through the work of the Campaigns and Policy team.
  • Oversee the monitoring and evaluation of funded work and the communication of clear impacts and achievements.
